Description

f i `UnuTfnio STATES! PATENT Ormes,
JOHN RICHARDS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRIOATORS FOR SCROLL-SAW STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 36,?29, dated October 2l, ISU?.
To all whom, tmay concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN RICHARDS., of Columbus, in the county of Franklin, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Iinprovenienti in Lubrieators fOr- Scroll -Saw Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the ae- 'eompanying drawings, forming part lOf this specification, in which- Figure l is a partial side view and partial vertical section of ascio1l'saw stock-guide and my improved lubrieator. Fig. 2 is a full side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizorital section of the same.
Similar `letters of reference in the several ligures indicate corresponding parts.
The'nature Of my invention consists in the combi-nation, with two separated bearing and guide boxes, O f an intermediate tubular lubricating device. The said device, having its bore or chamber made with a greater diam eter than the bore ofthe guide-bores, so that while the saw-stock is necessarily fitted snugly Vwithin thev boxes, a space exists between theA saw-stoel; and the tubularlubricating device, said space serving to contain cotton-waste and lubricating-fluid.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, l will proceed to de- .seribe the saine with reference to thedrawings. i
A represents a casting of T forni in its horizontal section, and having its web, portion a hollowing or of yoke shape, asat b.
.Thiseasting is formed with anupper bearing and guide box, c, and a similar lower box, d, said boxes being half in the casting. and half ih screw-plates e e, as represented. The casting A bolts firmly to an upright pillar of a scroll-saw table or frame and occupies a position below said table. l
Bis a light metal tube with `an Oil-indnc` tion spout, O, leading into it. The diameter of this tube, internally, is considerably greaterthan the diameter of the interior et: the boxes' c d.4 The tubeB O is arranged between theV two boxes c d, and is supplied with a lining of cotton-waste, f, or other material which Awill absorb and retain oil or lubricating-fluid when the same is poured through the spoutOv into'the tube B, as illustrated.
" Dis the saw-stock; E, the saw, and F the pitman. A'The stock is made many sided and of a size to just snugly it endende up and down in the boxes c d; VBy being many sided,
which is the shape of the boxes, cannot turn after being set,'and by being fitted snugly to the boxes it cannot wabble77 or saw un` true. rllhe size of the stoel; isequal-froin end to end, and, therefore, that portion which comes between the boxes c d does not' come in contact with the lubricating-tube B, but
plays through the linin'gf formed of eottonwaste saturated with oil or lubricating-Huid.
Vhen the stock is adjusted to its position,
mill. New, toobviate this dangerous defect, y
and still not destroy the nice lit between the stoel: and its guide-boxes, was a matter el' much study and'eontrivanee, and thesinlple and effective plan which Ihave devised is of as much importance, in one View oit' the case, i
as the whole mill, for withoutit, O'r its equivalent, themill is useless for high speeds.
From the drawings it will be evident that most of the dust from the saw falls directly upon the top bearing, and, owing to this, it
becomes necessary that a constant and perfeet lubrication of the parts be maintained, in
order tO compensate for the absorption of the oil by the sawdust. Such' constant and perfeet lubrication is effecteid by the waste cotton, hemp, Or'other absorbent material, sata rated with oil poured in through the tube O and distributed evenly over thersnrfaee ot' the stock; any undue heating of the stockl causing a greater quantity to iow from the `absorbent lining Of the tube to counteract it.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the bearing and guideboxes c eZ, intermediate easing, B, andsa-w stock, or the equivalent thereof, constructed and Operating and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
