FIGJ
INVENTOR MILORAD MIRJANIC MVM ATTORNEYS CYLINDER BLOCK FOR LIQUID-COOLED INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES WITII INSER'IED CYLINDER LINER The present invention relates to a cylinder block for liquidcooled internal combustion engines with inserted cylinder liner.
The present invention is based on the aim to provide a good cooling for a cylinder block with smallest possible structural expenditure.
This is achieved according to the present invention in that a groove, possibly a multiple groove for the guidance and conduction of the cooling liquid is arranged spirally shaped, preferably winding with a small pitch from an inlet to an outlet, at the outer surface of the cylinder liner or at the inner surface of the mounting body of the cylinder liner, and in that the grooving is delimited externally by the mounting body of the cylinder liner or internally by the cylinder liner itself.
The main advantage of this cooling medium flow is a very good heat removal as a result of a longer, appropriately extending path of the cooling medium about the cylinder wall. The possibility exists with this arrangement of the cylinder wall cooling to conduct the liquid of the cylinder head cooling system in parallel with that of the cylinder block so that both engine parts receive cooling liquid with lowest possible temperature.
In a preferred type of construction of the present invention, cooling liquid spaces possibly separated from one another by a separating or partition wall may be arranged in the mounting body which are in communication with the inlet and the outlet of the grooving. An additional reinforcement of the crankcase in the transverse plane is achieved by the separating or partition wall. In this construction, the fastening of the cylinder head is not impaired by the cooling system since the bolt eyes are disposed outside of the cooling medium. A cylinder warping or a warping of the cylinder liners can be reduced to a minimum by the optimum design of the cooling system in accordance with the present invention.
According to a further feature of the present invention, the inlet and outlet may terminate in the grooving tangentially to the circumference of the cylinder liner.
Furthermore, it is proposed according to the present invention that the grooving commences at the upper edge of the cylinder liner andthat the grooving winds about the cylinder liner either entirely or only in part over its entire height.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a cylinder block for liquid-cooled internal combustion engines with inserted cylinder liner which obviates by simple means the aforementioned shortcomings and drawbacks encountered in the prior art.
Another object of the present invention resides in a cylinder block for liquid-cooled internal combustion engines which enables an optimum cooling with minimum structural expenditures.
A further object of the present invention resides in a cylinder block construction for liquid-cooled internal combustion engines with inserted cylinder liners which favors the removal of heat while permitting the use of separate cooling liquid conductions for the cylinder block and the cylinder head cooling systems.
A still further object of the present invention resides in a cylinder block construction for liquid-cooled internal combustion engines of the type described above which brings about a reinforcement of the crankcase in the transverse plane while facilitating the fixing of the cylinder head onto the cylinder block without disturbing the cooling systems.
These and further objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become more obvious from the follow ing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which shows, for purposes of illustration only, two embodiment in accordance with the present invention, and wherein:
FIG. I is a partial longitudinal cross-sectional view through a cylinder block with inserted cylinder liner in accordance with the present invention;
FIG. 1A is a partial longitudinal cross-sectional view similar to the upper portion of FIG. 1, except for the modified multiple groove structure; and
FIG. 2 is a partial top cross-sectional view taken along the line II-II of FIG. 1.
Referring now to FIG. 1 of the drawing, reference numeral 1 designates therein the mounting body, i.e., cylinder block which contains two cooling liquid spaces 3 and 4 separated from one another by a partition wall 2. A cylinder liner 5 is inserted into the cylinder block or mounting body 1 in a conventional manner. At its outer surface 6 the cylinder liner 5 is provided with a spirally-shaped groove 7 for conducting the cooling liquid.
The cooling liquid flows from the cooling liquid space 3 by way of an inlet 8 at the upper edge of the cooling liquid space 3 into the groove 7, flows through the same, and flows out of the groove 7 through an outlet 9 within the area of the lower edge of the cooling liquid space 4.
According to the present invention, instead of the grooving 7, a multiple grooving system in the manner of a multiple thread may be provided whereby all groove inlets and outlets are combined into a respective common inlet and common outlet, respectively. FIG. 1A shows an arrangement utilizing such multiple grooves 7'.
While I have shown and described only two embodiments in accordance with the present invention, it is understood that the same is not limited thereto but is susceptible of numerous changes and modifications as known to those skilled in the art and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the details shown and described herein but intend to cover all such changes and modifications as are encompassed by the scope of the appended claims.
