" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE FRANKLIN DIGGS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
' OVERALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,198, dated July 26, 1887.
Application filed May-'20, 1887. Serial No. 238,838. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, J ESSE FRANKLIN Dress, of Baltimore city and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Overalls, of which the following is a specitication. I
My invention relates to overalls for the use of artisans and laborers whose clothing is exposed to severe wear and abuse; and it consists, mainly, in combining with the overalls a re-enforcing strip on each side, which extends from the seam at the seataround the outside of the hip and down across the knee to the inseam of the leg, thus covering the seat, thigh, and knee, which parts are exposed to the most severe wear.
It also consists in the means for re-enforcing the crotch in connection with the above construction, and also for forming rear pockets, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure l is a front view of the overalls; Fig. 2, a rear view; Fig. 3, a view of the crotch, looking between the legs with the legs spread apart; Fig. 4 is an inside view of the seat, and Fig. 5 is the pattern of one of the re enforcing strips.
A A A is one of the reenforcing strips. of which the parts A A are joined together at the back in line with the seat-seam. The part A A is then extended around over the hip and downacross the knee, and is secured at the inseam of the leg. These strips are stitched at their edges to the overalls, and at the point A, where they'cross the hips, they are made somewhat narrower than elsewhere, and between the seat and the hip portion, as at B, the stri at the top edge is not secured to the overalls for a short space, but has two parallel rows of vertical stitching to form a narrow pocket for a rule, Whetstone, knife, or
:other slender tool.
'In cutting the patterns for the re-enforce strip they are provided each with a tongue, 0, and when the two re-enforce strips are united to the overalls the tongue (3 of one of the strips is extended along the crotch-seam on the outside of the overalls, and the tongue of the other strip is extended along the crotchseam on the inside of the overalls, thus forming both an inside and outside ire-enforce for the crotch-seam. I 1
In defining my invention with greater clearncss I would state that I am aware that it is not new to construct a. re-enforce for overalls in one piece extending from the seat under the crotch inside thelegs and across the knees in front, and I do not claim this construction, which, it will be seen, leaves the hips entirely unprotected. By extending the reenforce strips outside and over the hips, as in my in vention, it not only protects the hips from wear, which are especially exposed to abrasion against the work-bench or a brick wall, but it also strengthens the overalls against tearing strains across the hip-bones in stooping. I am aware also that it is not new to form a pocket in an attached re'enforcing strip by leaving a portion of its edge unattached and stitching down beside the unattached portion, and that pantaloons and overalls have been provided with tongues or stays extended longitudinally along the crotch-seam, and I only claim these features in connection with my special construction of re-enforcing-strip, which brings these pockets in the rear of the hip and out of the way in stooping, and gives also with a single pattern a double inside and outside crotch re-enforce.
In making use of my invention I may also apply it to pantaloons and drawers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A pair of overalls, or its described equivalent, having a re-enforcing stripon each side extending from the seat-seam across the seat, around the hips upon the outside of the leg, and down across the knees in front, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A pair ofoveralls, or its described equivalent, having a re-enforcing' strip extending from the seat-sean1 across the seat, around the hips on the outside, and down across the knee, and having formed in the rear between the hip and the seat a pocket, 13, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A pair of overalls, or its described eq uivalent, having a reenforce-strip, A A A with tongue 0, attached on each side and extending from the seat seam across the seat, over the hips upon the outside, and across the knees in front, and having respectively the tongue 0 of one strip extended longitudinally along the crotch seam on the outside, and the tongue 0 of the other strip extended along
