SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,146, dated July 26, 1887.

To all 'zuhom it may concern.-
, Be itknown'that we, JOSEPH KAUFMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, and JULIUS E. MERGOTT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Latches for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of doorbolts which are so constructed as to permit of opening the door only a certain distance, so as to permit of seeing the person that desires to enter before opening the door altogether. The invention also consists in the combination,with said latch andplate, of alock in the door,said lock being provided with a bolt which can be passed into or through an aperture in the latch pivoted on the frame for the purpose of securely locking the latch when the door is partly opened, all as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of our improved safety door-latch, parts being broken out and others in section, the door being closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective end View of the slotted plate on the door and eye, A, through which a pin, B, is passed,
which is held in angle-clips C on the doorframe D, thus adapting said latch to swing on the pin 13. It is evident thatthe latch can be pivoted or hinged in any other suitable manner on the door-frame. A spiral spring, E, surrounding the pin B, has one end fastened'to the same and the other to the latch, said spring serving to throw the latch in the direction of the arrow to, Fig. 3. Any othersuitable spring may be provided for throwing the latch in the direction of the arrow athat is, in the direction from opening for the door; butweprefer the construction shown. The latch A has its swinging end beveled, as at F, and adjacent to said bevel it is provided wit-h a notch, G, in its upper edge.
A plate, H, provided with a rectangularlyprojecting wing; J, is fastened on the door W in such a manner that the part H of the plate projects beyond the swinging edge of the door. The said part H is provided with a vertical slot, I, the lower end of which is in communication with a slot, K, in the rectangular wing J of the plateH. The height of the slot I must be slightly greater than the greatest height of the latch A. A catch,L, is pivoted on the plate H above the latch A, and is provided at one end with a handle-lug, M, and at the opposite end with a weighted head, N, of such a size that it can pass into the notch G of the latch A. A lock, 0, is held in the rim of the door, the key-hole of said lock being below that part of the plate H across which the latch A rests. Said lock O'is provided with a bolt, P,which can pass into a suitable aperture in the rim of the door-casing or through an aperture, It, in the latch A near the swinging end.
The operation is as follows: The latch A is passed through the slots I K of the plate H,
and when the door is closed said latch rests transversely over the plate H, and is held in place by the catch L, which is adjusted ver- 'dcr the weighted head Not the catch L. \Vhen the notch G arrives at the weighted head of the catch L, said head drops into the notch and locks the latch in place, and also looks the door and prevents the moving of the door toward or from the rim of the casing. The door is thus opened sntliciently to permit the person on the inside to see and examine the person on the outside. If the door is to be opened entirely to admit the person on the out side, all that is necessary is to press down the handlelug of the catch L, so as to raise the head N from the notch G. By opening the door farther, the latch A, is withdrawn from the slots I K of the plate H and swung into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig". l by the spring E.v When the door is to be closed again, the latch A is swung toward the rim of the door and passed through the slots l K of the plate H, and when the door is swung against the rahbet of the casing the latch A is swung automaticallyacross the plate H, and then can be locked in place by the catch L, as shown in Fig. L
In case it is desired to lock the door in place when )artl T oven as shown in Fl 3, andto prevent a person on the outside from raising the catch L by means of a wire or other iinplement, the bolt 1? of the lock 0 is thrown outward, so as to pass through the aperture R of the latch A, (shown in Fig". 3,) whereby the latch is locked inplaee. The lock 0 and its bolt 1 can also be used as a night-latch.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a safety-latch for doors, the combination, with a swinging latch, of a fixed winged plate on the door ,which wing is provided with a slot through which the latch can be passed, and of a catch pivoted on said plate for engagcment with the latch, substantially as set forth.
2. In a safety-latch for doors, the combina tion,with a swinging, latch, of a spring acting on said latch and swinging the same in adirection from the door, a winged plate having slots in the wing, said winged plate being fastened on the door, and a catch on said plate, substantially as set forth.
3. In a safety-latch for doors, the combination, with a casing and door, of" a latch pivoted on the casing, and provided with an ap erture, a winged plate on the door, which winged plate has a slot through which the latch can be passed, a catch on said plate, and a lock held in the rim of the door, the belt of which look is in the same horizontal plane as,
the aperture in the latch, substantially as set forth.
