UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, GEORGE D. NICHOLS, OF NEV CANAAN, CONNECTICUT.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,113, dated July 26, 1887.
Application filed April 11, 1887. Serial No. 234,345. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. NIoHoLs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Canaan, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements on those for which Letters Patent were granted to me December 21,1886,No. 354,610,
' and March 8,1887, No. 359,225; and it consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of the various parts, as hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear view of a corset embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is an inside back view. Figs. 3, 4, 5,'and 6 are dctailviews hereinafter referred to.
The corset is made with two side or hip sections, A A, with a'solid back section laced thereto, as shown by the lacings a a. back section consists of three parts, B C C. The central part, B, is nearly straight, or'may be slightly tapering, and the side pieces, 0 C, are curved toward the right and left, respectively. The side, pieces are attached to the central piece at the waist portion by stitching or. otherwise, and at the upper and lower ends by elastic webbing. In the middle section, B,
forming part of the back section, there is a pocket, I), for holding a vertical stay, said pocket being provided with a cap or covering, P. This pocket is so-constructecl as to open at the top from the inside and turn over or fold down over from the outside without being fastened down. The object of this formation is to facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of the stay and prevent it from acci- This This will be of great advantage to persons having weak spines, as it will enable them to wear or remove said stay without injury to the corset, and thus avoid any undue pressure upon the spine. The pockets D for the stays are also provided with an asbestos lining, g, the object of which is to protect the stays from the effects of the heat and perspiration, and, also, being a non-conductor of heat, it protects the body of the wearer both by retaining the heat of the body and by preventing external heat from reaching the body.
At the top and bottom of the front clasp of the corset, in addition to the regular intermediate loops and studs, h 'i, is a locking device consisting of a stud, J, on. one clasp and aspring eyelet or button, K, on the other. The button K has in its interior a yielding spring to be operated by means of a thumbpiece, 8, on its periphery, for engaging and disengaging one from the other.
The stays C C may be provided below thewaist-line with movable skirt-supporters G, which may be of any suitable construction.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A corset having a solid back provided with curved stays C C, carrying detachable skirtsnpporters G below the waist-line of said corset and united by central section, B, said central section having an open pocket, D; provided with an asbestus lining, g, and constructed with a cap or covering, P,with a free portion to turn over the top of the pocket and thereby facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of the vertical stayE and prevent its displacement when in use, substantially as herein described.
GEORGE D. NICHOLS.
