UNITED STATES PATENT 'FFICE.
ASA BARNES, OF DOVER, NORTH CAROLINA.
GUANO-DISTRIBUTING CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,915, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed May 14, 1887. Serial No. 238,241. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Asa BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, inthe county of Craven and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guano-Distributing Carts; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of my improved guano-distributer. Fig. 2is a rear end view with rear wall of body removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of regulater.
The invention is an improved machine to distribute guano and other fertilizers, its objects being to distribute the material auto; matically at regular intervals of time and to regulate the amount so distributed; and it consists in the construction and novel combina tion of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the cart, the body 13 of which is triangular in cross-section and the sides converging downward. The body is provided with a central longitudinal partition, 0, dividing the body vertically, but cutaway, as at I), at its lower part, to allow the compartments on each side of the partition to communicate with the discharge-opening c.
D D are the shafts, and E is the axle, all of usual construction.
F is a longitudinal door, hinged at its up per edge to the side b of the cart.over the dis charge-opening c. The wheelsff turn on the axle, and on'the hubfof the one on the opposite side to the door is secured, by screws or otherwise, the cam-rin g G, havingthe cam p rojections g g.
H is a lever, pivoted at its front end to a standard rising from the front end of the cart, and resting upon the cam-ring, so that it will be raised on its pivoted point by the cam proj ections g as the wheel rotates.
I is a chain, connected at its lower end to a hook on the door F, and at its upper end to a hook secured at a suitable point to the inward surface of the lever H, so that when the said lever is raised by the cam projections the door is held tightly closed by means of the chain. The projections are preferably three in number, and the door is opened by the weight of the contained fertilizer, when one of said projections is not holdingthe door closed, by keeping the lever H raised.
J is an adjusting-frame secured to the body at the near end thereof, and consisting of the vertical bars K and the horizontal retainingrods L L, which slide in bearing-openings in said bars.
M is a plate secured to the rear sides of and connecting the two bars K, and provided with the horizontal slots m, having the vertical downward extensions m m at their outer and inner ends, respectively.
N N are arms standing at right angles outward from the rods L andpassing through the corresponding slots m, so that when any one of the rods is slid either in an outward or inward direction and the pin turned down in the vertical extension at nfof the corresponding slot m the rod will be locked in position. WVhen the rods are slid outward, their projecting ends sustain the rear end of the lever H, the highest rod holdingit sohigh that none of the cam projections g touch it when the cam'ring rotates with the wheel, so that the door F is kept permanently closed by thepull of the chain I. The highest rod beingslid in ward allows the lever to drop onto the projecting ends ofthe lower rods and come within striking distance of the projections g. The higher the rod is that sustains the lever the less the door can open at intervals between the passage of the projections under the lever.
In operation the weight of the material opens the door when the pull of the chain thereon is released by the described means.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination, with the cart having the body provided with downwardly-converging sides, the longitudinal discharge-opening, the hinged door, and the adjustingframe secured to its rear end and consisting of the vertical bars, the horizontal rods sliding in opposite openings in said bars and provided with the IOC In testimony whereof I ai'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
