Abstract

In a sanding device, a contact roller is steel material having grooves provided at an equal pitch and at an angle in relation to a longitudinal axis of the contact roller on an outer peripheral surface thereof and each having a larger width at a bottom portion thereof in comparison with that of a top portion; and pressure elements fitted displaceably into said grooves for applying pressure to a material to be processed in contact with a belt sander mounted thereon.

1 Claim, 2 Drawing Figures CONTACT ROLLER IN A SANDING DEVICE This application is a continuation of Ser. No. 757,278, filed Sept. 4, 1968, now abandoned.
The present invention relates to a contact roller in a sanding device.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a contact roller of simple structure having plural strips of pressure elements fitted displaceably thereinto depending upon a material to be processed.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a contact roller in a sanding device, which can not only achieve double belt sanding with improved performance but also perform versatile sanding on one sanding device.
In the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of a contact roller according to the present invention is shown, wherein,
FIG. 1 is a front view of such a contact roller, and
FIG. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line H II of FIG. 1, showing the fitting of strips of the pressure elements.
R is a contact roller of a steel material having a shaft 1 and spiral grooves 2 provided at an equal pitch on the outer surface of the roller. Each groove 2 runs spirally at an angle of 45 in relation to the shaft 1, and has a bottom width larger than a top width. Into each of said grooves 2, a strip of pressure element P is fitted, inserted in a manner to project partly out of its groove 2. The strip of pressure element P may be formed of, for example, wear-resistant rubber.
The major disadvantage of the conventional rubber contact roller lies in the difficulty of using wear-resistant rubber to fit into grooves in the roller because of the trouble of cutting such rubber to fit the ordinary grooves. Another disadvantage in the conventional contact roller lies in difficulty in replacement; it is practically difficult to select a contact roller having an appropriate hardness according to a material to be processed. If uneven abrasion takes place on the surface of the contact roller, grinding on the worn surface has been the only possible repair work, from the view points of economy and structure. Grinding of the worn surface of the contact roller, however, results in diametrical reduction of the roller on every occasion. Diametrical irregularity of rollers caused from repair grinding is seriously inconvenient in a two belt sanding device wherein sanding process is performed simultaneously at two portions, since it causes irregularity in the sanding surface of the belt, resulting to either lack of uniformity or impossibility of grinding work. Repair grinding of the roller is unfavorable in a more than two belt sanding device from the view-points of precision of performance and handling. Further disadvantage in the conventional contact roller lies in a higher cost-price, since consumption of expensive rubber is larger.
The grooved contact roller of the present invention overcomes these defects and disadvantages. That is, pressure elements P which are fitted into grooves of the roller surface, may be formed of wear-resistant rubber. Pressure elements may be replaced without causing any trouble as the contact roller is kept mounted on the sanding device, so that grinding according to a material to be processed can be efficiently achieved by selecting the configuration and hardness of pressure elements. Consumption of expensive rubber is greatly reduced, which contributes to reduction of cost price of the contact roller. Worn pressure elements may be replaced economically. Therefore, the grooved contact roller having replaceable pressure elements provides efiicient perfonnance when it is used in the more than two belts sanding device.
The contact roller according to the present invention, when mounted on a sanding device, performs versatile sanding with greatly improved efficiency.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A contact roller for applying pressure to a material to be processed in contact with a belt sander,
said contact roller being a steel metal roller having a width of at least mm and a plurality of equiangularly spaced, longitudinally-extending helical grooves arranged around its periphery, and inclined to its ongitudinal axis at an angle of 30 to 60, each groove having straight sides in cross-section and being of slightly larger width at its bottom than at its top, and
a wear-resistant resilient rubber pressure element fitted displaceably in each groove,
each groove having a depth of at least half but less than the full height of said pressure elements,
all said pressure elements projecting outwardly beyond the periphery of said metal roller and being spaced'from one another circumferentially of said metal roller,
each pressure element being curved helically longitudinally about said axis, and
adjacent pressure elements overlapping longitudinally of said axis.

Claims (1)
