Be it known that I, HERMAN E. women, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds; and I do deelare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap' pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to bed'sofas.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, durable bedsofa which may be easily changed from a sofa to a bed, and vice versa. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the bed-sofa adjusted for use as a sofa. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same with the frame adjusted for use as a bed and the upholstered frames partially turned, showing the connecting-bar. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same adjusted for use as a bed. Fig. 4 is a front view of the bed-sofa. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the arm, showing the construction, the toothed catch by which the arm is adjusted to the post, and the catch by which the arm is held in position when the whole is used for a bed; also a section of the top of the post and the arm or bar by which the toothed catch on the arm is held when the whole is adjusted for use as a sofa. Fig. 6 is a side view of the back upholstered frame when it is adjusted for use as a bed, showing the adjustable legs. Fig. 7 is an end view of that portion of the two upholstered frames where they come together, with a portion broken away, showing the pin and slot by which the two are kept in line.

The main frame consists of the side pieces, (t, supported by the legs b and c, braced by the arm (I, the sides thus formed being connected by the rails e and f, the rail 6 connecting the front and the railf the back legs. Pivoted at h to the sides 9 are the arms 1 which at their outer ends are constructed as shown in Fig. 5, and are provided with the catches i, which engage with a triangular pin, which is held in position in the top of the leg or post b at right angles, with a slot cut in thepost to accommodate the catch At 0 on the back legs are attached projections, which fit into a catch, k, (shown in Fig. 5,) on the arms when the frame is adjusted for use as a bed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

It will be noticed that the arm, in combination with the catch, holds the back framein a horizontal position when adjusted for use as a bed, and with the ratchet and triangular pin, in combination with the arm, the back is held in nearly a vertical position when adjusted for use as a sofa.

The upholstered frames landm are made of strips of any suitable materiahand having ends and sides to which the upholstering is fastened, one side to be upholstered as a sofa or chair, the other side upholstered like a mattress. These frames Z and m are supplied with axles near the middle of their ends,which revolvein boxes Z and m in the frame. A red, at, is pivoted to the top of the back and the back of the seat'framcs. This connecting-rod causes both frames to revolve simultaneously. WVhen adjusted for use as abed, dowel-pinsin the frame at enter recesses in the frame Z, as shown in Fig. 7. These will not allow the edge of either frame to pass below the other at the meetingpoint. These frames are provided with folding legs 0, as shown in Fig. 6, and when not in use are folded over the edge of the frame, as shown in dotted lines. Vhen in use, those attached to the frame Z support it, as shown in Fig. 3. Thus it will be seen that the legs 0 assist the main frame in supporting the revolving frames l and m.

In the ends of the frame Z are pins 1), which project enough to strike on the sides a when in the position shown in Fig. 3, which assist in strengthening the joint between the frames Z and m. At the center of the top of the back is socured a catch of any suitable design,which will assist in holding the frame in position. This catch is shown and marked q, Fig. 4.

In operating or changing from a sofa to a bed, the arms are raised from the pins j, the catch q disengaged, the back let down to a horizontal position, and the catches k on the arms adjusted on the projections c on the hind legs. The top of the back is then pushed forward, which, by the arm n, revolves the seat or frame Z until the pin m enters therecessl. The folding legso are then let down and the change is complete,which operation is reversed in changing again into a sofa.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. The combination, with the main supporting-frame, of the frame 9 hinged to said main frame, the upholstered frames Z and m,

pivoted at their middle points of opposite sides in the main supporting-frame and to the hinged frame 9 g, respectively, the rod n, connecting the adjacent edges of the frames Z and m, and the arms 1', adapted to engage devices, substantially as described, on the main frame to hold the upholstered frames in the positions to which they may be adjusted, as set forth.

2. The combination, with the main supporting-frame, of the frame gg, hinged to said main frame, the upholstered frames Z and m,

3. The combination, with the main supporting-frame, of the frame 9 g, hinged to said main frame, the upholstered frames Z and m, pivoted at their middle points of oppositesides in the main supporting-frame and to the hinged frame 9 g, respectively, the rod a, connecting the adjacent edges of the frames Z and m, said I \Vitnesses:
