Description

NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN O. *MO-NTIGNANI,` OF ALBANY, NEV YORK.v
HVIPROVED CLOTHES-HANGING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 36,666, dated Octobcr14, 1862.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, J oHN O. MONTIGNANI, of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and useful article of household furniture, which I call a Portable XVardrobe; 7 and I declare the following specification, with the drawings accompanying it and forming part thereof, to be a full and complete description of my invention.
A A is an oblong wooden frame of variable dimensions, divided into two compartments by the cross-bar I3. Between the frame and the crossfbar slender metal shafts S are placed, pivoted at top and bottom into the frame and bars, from which shafts project metal clothespins I), ofthe forms now in use for wardrobes, closets, hat-stands, and hall coat-slats, or of any convenient form for the suspension of clothing or other articles against a wall. The frame can be hung up by metal loops or rings L L,I fastened to the upper rail ot' the frame, which should be so fit-ted as to turn down behind the frame when it is not in use, or by holes pierced through the frame for the same purpose.
This apparatus may be made as a single frame or with any number of crossbars and tiers of pins, as may be convenient; but probably two tiers will be as many as can be conveniently used.
'Ihe convenience of this simple machine will be manifest at sight. It affords within a small compass suspension-points for a large number of articles by the use of only two attaching nails or hooks in the wall against which it is hung, avoiding the ldefacement of the walls in a number of places by pins that cannot be removed without injury to the plaster or paper. It is in itself a more sightly object than rows of clothes-pins occupying the wall, and may be made quite ornamental at a cheap expense. When not needed for use, it can be laid aside within a small space by turning the pins down within the fraaie, (as they are .shown in the drawings, with the exception of those marked U. which are projecting forward,) and then, if ofsnitablelinear dimensions, can belaid within a travelingtruuk, for service in bed-rooms in taverns, where conveniences for arranging ga rments are seldom of a suitable kind or exten sive enough for the convenience of travelers.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A frame having between its bars pins for suspending garments or other articles, fitted to fold within the range of the bars, constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth in the within specifictitiou.
JOHN O. MONTIGNANI.
