M. D. TEMPLE.
PUMP.
No. 365,951. Patented July 5, 1887;

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS D. TEMPLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,951, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed July 17, 1886. Serial No. 208,234. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Monnls D. TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 shows a vertical sectional view of my pump through its longitudinal axis, show ing the various parts fully and clearly as constructed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the part B, taken from its upper end, with the valve removed. Fig. 3 shows a modification of Fig. 1, in which the flanged tube cl 'of Figs. 1 and 2 is dispensed with.
Like letters refer to like parts.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of my pump for which I hold United States Letters Patent No. 303,339, granted August 12, 1884:.
A represents the pump having an internal shoulder, a, at its lower end, upon which rests the metal cylinder a, having an inturned flange, o, resting upon the'shoulder a, formed integral with the pump-barrel. Said cylinder to is attached to the pump-barrel A by means of a special apparatus, B. Said apparatus B consists of a central tube, and a flanged ring, (1, attached to the tube 9 by means of connecting-arms c. The flange of said ring (1 rests upon the inturned flange o of the metal tube a, as shown. The metal tube 9 extends beyond the lower end of the pumpbarrel A, and is screw-threaded upon its outer side. A flanged nut, 0 having a large flange, c, is screwed upon the threaded pipe 9, and presses with its flange 0 against the bottom end of the pump-barrel A, and is so proportioned with the length of the tube g that when said parts are in place, as shown, the tube g extends through about one-half of the nut 0 Into the lower end of the nut c is inserted the screwthreaded pipe 1?,which forms the suctionpipe of the pump-barrel A. A leather or like packing, c, is shown resting upon the shoulder, 0. Through the flange c are bored one or more holes, which are closed by stoppers t, which, when removed, discharge the water in the pump-barrel and with itthe sand 8, which has passed up into the pump-barrel. current passes upward against and around the valve 1', the sand brought up through the pipe 1? falls down in the annular space or reservoir R, and from which it may be discharged by removing the stopper t. Across the internal diameter of the tube gare attached or cast integral therewith arms m, having eyes or holes concentric with the tube g, through which the stem Z of the valve Z plays, which is preferably constructed as here shown; but the valve may be attached to the tube 1 with a hinge or in any other well known manner. By the pressure of the flange 0 against the bottom of the pumpbarrel A the parts A, B, 0 and a are united and held each in their respective places, and by the removal of the nut c" are therefore freed from each other.
In the modified construction shown in Fig.
As the 3 the flanged ring (1 is dispensed with, and the 1 tube 9 may fill or nearly fill the bore and be provided with a flange, (l, at its upper end, which rests upon the flange 12, thereby fornr ing a reservoir or sand-chamber, It, around the outside of said flange. -The pipe B may be provided with a flange, c, which presses against the lower end of the pumpbarrel A, to answer in place of the coupling or nut 0 and the said pipe has an internal screw-thread which fits upon the exteriorthreaded pipe 5 forming in this case a connecting apparatus,B, the flanged pipe 1? taking the place of the flanged nut c, a sand-hole provided with a plug, it, through the side of the pump answering the same purpose as the same part answered in the construction shown in Fig. 1.
It will be observed that the construction shown in Fig. 3 shows in a more general way the object of my invention, and that the flange d of the tube (2 may be attached directly to the tube 9. It may also be observed that the tube or apparatus B of Fig. 3 need not fitl the bore through which it passes, but may leave an an nular chamber, It, as shown, into which the sand may fall throughholes in the flange (Z, as indicated.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. The pump-barrel A, having shoulder a,
tube 9, and flanged tube (1, and nut c, sub stantially as specified.
in combination with apparatus B, formed of 2. The shouldered pump-barrel A, incombination with the flanged tube u, apparatus B, formed of the tube g, and flanged tube d, flanged nut 0 and threaded pipe P, substan- 5 tially as specified.
3. In combination with theinternally-shouldered pump-barrel A,the flanged pipe u,sh0uldered pipe d, threaded pipes gand P, and nut 0 substantially as specified.
IO 4. A pump whereof the barrel A is provided
