PUMP-BARREL.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. WAITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rouseville, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pump-Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pump barrels and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
The pump barrel forming the subject of this invention is particularly adapted for deep Wells. Such barrels have heretofore been made by providing a tubing or casingv and securing within this tubing or casing a liner forming the working surface of the pump barrel. Such constructions under some conditions have developed a difiiculty in that the sand packs around the liner making the removal of the liner from the outer casing or tubing difficult.
The object of this invention is to obviate this diiiicu-lty. ,l
The invention is illustrated in-the accom-' panying drawings as follows .lFigure 1 shows a central section'through a pump barrel. Fig. 2 a section'on the line 2-2 in Fig. '1.
1 marks the fitting at the bottom of the pump barrel. It has the screw threadslQ at the bottom in which the strainer 3 is usually secured. This fitting or coupling 1 also has the screw threads 4 in its upper end .into which the outer tubing of the pump barrel is screwed. The coupling or fitting 1 also has the screw threads6 into .Which the liner 7 is screwed. The-fitting also has the tapered opening 8 extending from the bottom of the liner which forms the seat for the standing valve (not shown). The

The gasket 14 and ring 13 form a closure against the passage of .sand to the space 12 but are pervious to liquid so that the liquid being pumped fills the space 12 and is subjected to the pressure of the column of liquid. in the Well tubing 10. This is im portant' in that the liner 7 is made of light gage both for economy in material and economy inspace. It will be noted also that the light gage liner 7 will require a finer thread than the ordinary thread used on the tubing 5. llf, therefore, the space 12 is packed with sand it will be difficult to remove the coupling because the diiferent pitches of the threadsifi and {1 would result in the stripping of the threads 6. What I claim as new is 1. A pump barrel comprising an outer tubing; a liner secured within the outer tubing, the upper end of thediner being above the top of the outer tubin a. coupling on the'top of the outer tu ing; an
outer tubing extension secured in the upper end of the coupling; and a closure against sand arranged around the liner and between the ends of the outer tubing and the tubing extension.
2. A pump barrel comprising an outer tubing; a liner secured within the outer tubing, the u per end of the liner being above the top 0 the outerv tubing; a coupling on the top of the outer tubing; an .outer tubing extension secured in the upper end of the coupling; and a'closure against sand pervious to'liquid arranged around the liner and between the ends of the outer tubing e and the tubing extension.
3. A pump barrel comprising 'an outer tubing; a liner secured within the'outer tubing, the upper end of the liner being above the top of the outer tubing; a coupling on the top of the outer tubing; an outer tubing extension secured in the upper end of the coupling; and a removable ring arranged around the liner and between the ends of the outer tubing and tubing extension. said ring resting on'the top of the outer tubing.

A pump barrel comprising an outer tubing; a liner secured within the outer tubing, the upper end of the liner being above the top of the outer tubing; a coupling on the top of the outer tubing; an outer tubing extension secured in the upper end of the coupling; and a closure comprising a gasket forming a closure against sand and pervious to liquid arranged around the liner and between the ends of the outer tubing and the tubing extension.-
5. A pump barrel comprising an outer tubing; a liner secured within the outer tubing, the upper end of the liner being above the top of the outer tubing; a coupling on the top of the outer tubing; an outer tubing extension secured in the upper end of the coupling; a removable ring arranged around the liner and between the ends of the outer tubing and the tubing extension; and apervious gasket resting on the ring and extending around the liner and arranged between the ends of the tubing and the tubing extension.
6. A pump barrel comprising an outer tubing; a liner arranged within the outer tubing forming a space between the liner and the tubing; a fitting having a screw thread into which the tubing is screwed; a screw thread of lesser pitch into which the liner is screwed; and a closure around the upper end of the liner closing the space between the liner and the tubing.
