Application filed September 8, 1911. Serial Ito. 848,803.
4 'incert'ain im rovements in the construction thereof as wi be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In connection with the pumps for oil wells, a stufiin box is arranged at the top of the well for t e polished rod. These have been commonly made of cast iron and more or less difiiculty has been experienced with these breaking due to various causes. In the present invention, theouter wall of the studing box is formed of a single piece of tubing or pipe and the shoulder for sustaining the packing made by indenting the walls of the tubing or pipe.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure 1 shows a central section through a stufiing box, the packing being compressed by a spring. Fig. 2 a central section of a stufing box, the packing being compressed by a weight. Fig. 3 a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 2.
1 marks the wall of the packing. This hasthe screw threads 2 atIits ends to which the tubing may be attached. It is indented at 3 forming-a shoulder on which is prefe'r-. ably arranged a bushing 4. A. packing 5 is arranged on the bushin and the follower 6 is arran d on the pee 'ng. The follower has the s oulder 7. A spring 8'is arranged between the shoulder 7 and the yoke 9. The yoke 9 is perforated at the ends and bolts 11 extend through these perforations and perforations 12 in the yoke 13. The yoke 13 is arranged around the walls 1, the upper end ofthe wall of the stug box being flanged at 14 to retain the yoke 13 in place. The polished rod A extends through the packin in the usual manner.
In t e alternative construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the follower 6 has the projections 6 on whichrests a lever 15. The lever indenting the tube; a flange arranged on the is pivoted by means of a in 16 on the ear 13 extending from the yo re 13. A weight 17 is arranged on the lever and exerts presall sure on the follower. With this construction, the walls of the stulfing box are of the same size as the tubing or ipe to which it is'attached so that it will cm a continuation of the tubing. At the same time, it is conveniently formed of wrought metalso as to avoid breaks which'have given trouble heretofore.
atI claim as new is 1. In a stufing box for polished rods for oil wells, the combination of a wrought metal cylindrically shaped tube having a shoulder formed by indenting the tube; abacking above the shoulder; and a follower for put-- ting pressure on thepacking.
2. n a stuffin box for polished rods for oil wells, the com ination of a wrought metal tube having a shoulder formed by indenting the tube a bushing on the shoulder; a packing on the bushing; and afollower on the packing.
3. In a stuffin box for polished rods for oil wells, the combination ofla wrought metal tube having a shoulder formed therein by upper end of the tube; a packing arranged on the shoulder; a follower on thepacking; a yoke surrounding the tube and engaging the flange at the u per end of the tube; and means secured to t e yoke for exerting presit sure on the follower.
4. In a stnfing box for polished rods for oil wells, thecombination of a wrought metal tube having a shoulder formed by indenting the tube; a flan e at the upper end of the tube; a lower yo e surrounding the tube and engaging the flange; a packing on the shouh 'der; a follower on the packing; an n per yoke; a s ring between the follower an the upper yo e; and a connectionbetween the upper yoke and the lower yoke.
In testimony whereof K -have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
