Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHNsEEO, OE WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
lMPROVEMENT lN |NVAL|DBE,DSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,578, dated September 30, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SEBO, of the city of Wilmington, county of Newcastle, and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; andl do'hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part. of this specification.
rlhe nature of my invention consists inthe shape Of the round and tapered rails D, to which the canvas is fastened, and in their arrangement and combination with the adjustable rest E and movable roller J.
TO enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, l will proceed to describe its construction and operation, to wit:
-A represents the posts and rails that 'form the bedstead.
C is the canvas upon which the patient rests. A feather bed Or mattress is placed underneath this canvas upon the rails A. The canvas or stout sheeting is tacked on and permanently Vfastened to round and tapered rails D, the
rails D being thicker in the center and tapering at both ends, so as to keep the canvas 'tightly and evenly stretched in the center, where the weight of the patients body is the heaviest and tends to stretch and bag it. A square frame, E, upon which canvas is stretched and permanently fastened, serves as a rest for the body, which is adjusted, when required, to any inclination Or horizontal position to suit the comfort of the patient by means of the iron rods G G, which extend downward on the outside of the head of the bedstead, and tO which cords H H are attached at the lower ends of rods G and suspended from a revolving railor roller, J, operated by a crank, K. This rail J rests in the forks of two supports, L, attached tO head posts A, and has a ratchet, M, and the crank K on one end. As the crank K is turned, the rail revolves and acts as a windlass, winding up the cords H H, and thus 'the square frame E is Y The aperture Q is for the patients use, andv underneath which a vessel is placed, when required, without disturbing the patientby placing the vessel between the canvas C and the bed or mattress. Between the footposts A is a revolving rail, R, having a light wooden square frame, S, attached, to answer the purpose of a table or fan, by the cord T, attached to the adjustable pin U and spring V. Pulleys W,with a ti ghteningcord, X, ratchet Y,dog Z, and crank a, serve to revolve and hold the rail D when lowering, raising, or stretching the oanvas C to the level required. The iron pins b, that are inserted through the posts A and into the ends of rails D, fit into cast-iron plates d on the ends of rails D, and can be withdrawn at any time and thrust through apertures e in the posts A, so as to allow the rails D, with the canvas C, to be raised afew inches higher when desirable.
The head-board f is a movable frame. It has extended legs that rest by a tenon andmortise in the rail A, and when the patient requires to have his head Or shoulders operated on Or wounds dressed the head-board f and cross-rail J can be instantly removed and again easily replaced. l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shape of the rails D and their arrangement and combination with the devices E, G, and J, arrangedaud combined as described,
for the purposes set forth.
JOHN SEBO.
