G. P. SOHAAP.
COMBINED CHAIR AND STEP LADDER.
N0. 365,637. PatentedJune 28, 1887';
- PIE 1- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE PHILIP SCHAAF, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
COMBINED CHAIR-AND STEP-LADDER.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,637 dated nne 28, 1887.
' Application filed June 29, 1886. Serial No.206,607. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, GEORGE PHILIP SOHAAF, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in a Combined Chair and Step-Ladder, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure I is a side elevation of the invention, showing the same adapted as a chair. Fig. II is a front view of parts shown in Fig. I. Fig. III shows. the invention adapted as a step-ladder.
In' the said drawings, A A are the front legs of the chair, rigidly connected together by the stretchers a a, and united at their upper ends to the front diagonal bars, B B. These bars are also connected to the front legs by means of stretchers b b.
O is the chair-seat, hinged to the top ends of the diagonal bars B B, the hinges being denoted by c c. I
D D are the back legs attached to the seat I O, and also to rear diagonal bars, E E. The
stretchers d d connect the back legs with the rear diagonal bars, E E, and correspond in arrangement with the ones b b.
F is the back of the chair, the side pieces of which consist in extensions of the back legs.
G G are arms of the chair, pivotedto the back F of the chair at m, and provided with slots 6 e and notches f and g.
H H are pins which project from the front diagonal bars, B; through the slots 6 e, and
they are adapted to also enter the notches f and g, for purposes hereinafter described.
' The stretchers b and d serve to support steps k, which are parts of the step-ladder. These steps are inoperative when the invention is used as a chair; but when the rear section of the chair-body is turned up,so that the top of the back touches the floor, as shownin Fig. III, they may be used as are steps in ordinary ladders. It will be seen that one step is missing, but its place is filled with the chairseat, which answers the purpose of a step.
When the invention is used as a chair, the pins H H are forced into the notches f to lock the two parts of the chair together. When the device is employed as a step-ladder, the pins H H are moved into the notches g g.
I is a perforate board, which can be either closed up, as shown in Fig. II, or extended, as shown in Fig. III, in which latter position it may be used as a rest for a bucket.
I claim as my invention In a combined chair and step-ladder, the combination of the front legs, A, having the diagonal bars B, back legs, D, having the diagonal bars E, the said bars being hinged to the front legs, back F, arms G G, pivoted to the said back and having the slots 6, and the pins H, which extend from the sides of the diagonal bars B and through the slot 6 of the said arms, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE PHILIP SOHAAF.
