Abstract
An adaptor for a bobbin or the like which is used on apparatus for twisting strands of textile or other fibers and will fit over a standard size spindle to provide a support for a bobbin having a diameter larger than the standard size spindle. The adaptor employs a resilient member which exerts a force on a plurality of dowels to press them against the inside walls of a bobbin or spool placed thereover.

WILLIAM P. WA RTHE N ATTORNEY BOBBIN ADAPTOR It is an object of the invention to provide a bobbin adaptor which is economical to produce, simple in design and which secures the bobbin in operative position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become readily apparent as the specification proceeds to describe the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view of one spindle of a twisting machine;
FIG. 2 is a bottom view of the bobbin adaptor shown in F IG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 33 of FIG. 2.
Looking now to the drawing, the bobbin adaptor generally designated 10, is shown telescoped over the spindle l2 and supported on the whorl 14 of the twisting frame which is driven by a drive tape (not shown). Telescoped over the adaptor 10 is a bobbin or spool 16 of lightweight cardboard or suitable material which is held in position at the bottom by dowels 18 and at the top by a second adaptor 20 which is telescoped over the spindle 12 and has an expanded portion 22 which engages the inside of the upper portion of the bobbin or spool 16.
The adaptor l basically consists of a body portion 24 preferably cast or molded from any suitable material such as aluminum or plastic and has a hole 26 therein which fits over the spindle 12. In the preferred form of the invention three grooves 28 are provided therein to accommodate the dowels 18 which exert the holding force on the inside of the bobbin 16. The bottom of the adaptor is hollow and a circular groove 30 is provided therein to accommodate the O-ring 32 which is of an elastomeric material and exerts a force on the dowels 18 to aid in holding them in place. A plurality of openings 34 are provided in the body portion 24 to accommodate set screws 36 which engage the spindle 12 to secure the adaptor thereto.
In operation, the combination of the resilient force of the O- ring 32 and the centrifugal force on the adaptor due to rotation of the spindle causes the dowels 18 to exert an outward holding force on the inside of the bobbin 16 to securely hold it in position on the spindle 12.
Although I have described in detail the preferred embodiment of my invention, I contemplate that many changes may be made without departing from the scope or spirit of my invention and I desire to be limited only by the claims.
That which is claimed is:
1. An adaptor for a bobbin or the like comprising: a body portion, a plurality of first circular substantially vertical grooves in the periphery of said body portion, a circular dowel in each of said grooves, a hollow portion in the bottom end of said body portion, a second circular groove in said body portion behind said first circular grooves and communicating with said hollow portion and an O-ring in said groove exerting an outward force on said circular dowels.
Claims (1)
1. An adaptor for a bobbin or the like comprising: a body portion, a plurality of first circular substantially vertical grooves in the periphery of said body portion, a circular dowel in each of said grooves, a hollow portion in the bottom end of said body portion, a second circular groove in said body portion behind said first circular grooves and communicating with said hollow portion and an O-ring in said groove exerting an outward force on said circular dowels.
