UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
JOHN ABBOTT, OF BLAOKHEATH, COUNTY OF KENT, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR BENDING RAILS, 86C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,325, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed May 9, 1887. Serial No. 237,649.
(No model.) Patented in England October 3, 1885, No. 11,807; in France October 24, 1885, No. 171,854; in Germany October 29, 1885, No. 36,185, and in Austria-Hungary January 26, 1886, No. 38,226
and No. 473/86.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ABBOTT, engineer,
a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Lee Park, Blackheath, in the county of Kent, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Apparatus for Bending Rails, Bars, and the like, (for which Francis Charles Dixon and myself, the said JOHN ABBOTT, have obtained patents in Great Britain, No. 11,807, dated October 3, 1885; France, No. 171,854, dated October 24, 1885; Germany, No. 36,l85,dated October 29, 1886, and Austria-Hungary, Nos. 38,226 and 473/86, dated January 26, 1886,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of apparatus .for bending rails which comprise a frame carrying rollers arranged to bear on both sides of the rails and extending between the rollers on one side thereof only, so that the apparatus can be applied to rails already laid.
The object of my invention is to improve and strengthen the construction of the frame of the machine or apparatus, and other details, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a side view, of the apparatus applied to the bending of a rail. Fig. 3 isa transverse section on the lines 1 2, Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are a side view and plan, respectively, of the movable roller and its carrier, by which it is mounted on the framing; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the apparatus, corresponding with Figs. 1 and 2.
The frame A, which carries the rollers B and O, mounted and capable of rotating upon pins b and c, is made of east-steel, and the arms A thereof extend on either side in a curve, as shown, directly between the centers of the rollersB and O and the center of the hereinafter described roller F. v The said frame has also formed in it guides a, in which the guidingsurfaces d of the carrier D can be moved toward or from the line on which the rollers B O are situated by means of a screw, E, running in a screw-box in the'said frame. The screw bears upon the outward end of the said carrier D. A bolt, 6, which passes through the axis of the screw and has a head at 0 engages in a recess in the carrier D, and serves to draw back the carrier when the screw E is rotated to move outward. In the carrierDis mounted a roller,'F, keyed or otherwise fixed to its axis f, which is provided with means for rotating it-such as, for example, a squared head,f upon which a handle or lever can be placed; or a worm and pinion or other means may be used suitable for rotating the axis, and consequently the roller affixed thereto.
The flange 0 upon the screw is marked with divisions, which may be numbered or lettered, so as to indicate, in connection with themark a on theframe, the curvature to which the apparatus is set to bend the rail or bar.
When the apparatus is to be used, it is placed on the rail or bar from above, so that the rail or bar is embraced between the roll ers BC on one side and the roller F on the other side, and the screw'E is turned so as to force the carrier D and the roller F inward until the division of the index on the flange e*, which indicates that the apparatus is set to the required curvature, is opposite the mark a on the framing. The handle or lever is then placed upon the head f of the axis f, and the roller F is thereby rotated, and the apparatus is caused to travel along the rail or bar and bend it to therequired curvature, the same as in apparatus of this class as hitherto devised.
I claim as my invention- 1. In arail-bending apparatus, the combination of the rollers and the frame A- A extending between the rollers,'and having guides at, with a carrier, D, adapted to the guides, and having aroller, F, and a screw, E, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the frame having guides to and rollers B O, with a carrier, -D, adapted to the guides and carrying a roller, a screw, E, and securing-bolt e, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
L JOHN ABBOTT.
