Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRADLEY W. FRANKLIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SECURIN'G- TEETH T0 ARTIFICIAL BASES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 36,513, dated September 23, 1862.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, BRADLEY W. FRANK- LIN, assignor to myself, Edwin B. Larcher, and Frederick Canfield Barlow, of the city and county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode in the Manufacture of Single and Block Teeth the Better to Secure Them to an Artificial Base; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figures l and 4 represent perspective views of my improved single and block teeth, Figs. 2 and 5 base views andV Figs. 3 and 6 end views of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the drawings.
The nature and object of my invention consists in providing my improved single and block teeth with dovetailed nicks or indentations the better to secure them to an artiicial base.
rIo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my improved single and block teeth out of any suitable material, but unlike any existing device employed to secure them to an artificial base, I provide them with a dovetailed nick or indentation in the ends of the block and sides of the single teeth of suitable breadth anddepth as seen in Figs. l, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, letter A, and if desirable I introduce into the body of the block or single teeth and projecting from it into the dovetailed nick or indentation a metallic pin as seen in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 letter B.
In the ordinary mode of securing teeth to an artificial base metallic pins are employed that project from the inner or lingual surface of the tooth or block or else grooves are made around the neck of the tooth or sides of the block, the result of which is, that the tooth or block when attached to an artificial base must be embedded so as to be in a great measure covered by the material, thus increasing the dimension of the dental substitute at those points where it is generally the most desirable to diminish, at the same time materially marring the natural appearance of the work.
The employment of my improved single and block teeth obviates all the defects, the dovetailed nick or indentation being situated at the base and end of the block and at the sides of the single teeth thus securing a perfect and secure attachment t-o the articial bas without embedding, so as to cover any portion of the lingual surface of the block ,or single teeth with the artificial base.
Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Let-V ters Patent as a new article of manufacture isu Block and single teeth provided with the clove-tailed nic-k or indentation A in the sides of the single or ends of the block teeth with or without the pin B, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
