Ham 0. Was-rm ROLLING MILL SLAB GUIDE In the provision of the plate side guides to control the passage of steel plate on the table of a rolling mill, a number of problems arise due to the arduous environment of the mill. Owing to the close spacing of the table rolls, typically such as 20-inch rolls on 24-inch centers, it is not practicable to provide load bearing support to the side guide extending between the rolls and effective to counter the longitudinal friction and impact forces exerted on the side guide by a plate passing thereagainst.
One previous solution has included the provision of a pair of rams carrying the guide in supported adjustable relation above the table rolls having a pivoting link securing the ram to the guide and provided with a shear pin to prevent undue transverse stressing of the ram.
A further problem relates to the support structure of the guide and its capability of withstanding longitudinal stress, that is to say stresses in the direction of the table main axis. In order to use the guide for the purpose of turning a slab laterally on the table rolls, in a plane parallel with that of the table surface, it has been customary to use the nose of the guide as a fulcrum in order to provide the necessary turning moment to the plate. Owing to the limited longitudinal load bearing capacity of the guide support mechanism it has been necessary in previous practice to inch the plate or slab up to the guide in order to minimize impact loading.
The present invention provides an adjustable side guide for use in relation to a mill table having a plurality of closely spaced table rolls, comprising first guide means supported over the table having an elongated guide face extending in the direction of the table main axis, guide positioning means to position the guide means transversely relative to the table in substantially unrestrained longitudinal relation thereto, and guide restraining means connected with the guide, extending above the surface of the table to a location inboard of the table rolls to provide longitudinal restraint thereto. By providing longitudinal restraining means in the form of a linkage connected with one end of the plate guide, the outer surface of the drag link thus formed constitutes a laterally inclined auxiliary guiding surface in relation with the face of the guide.
The expression inboard of the table" or inboard of the table rolls herein used relates to a position to one side or the other of the respective table or rolls, being related to an observer or operator and not to the table.
Certain embodiments of the present invention are described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein FIG. 11 is a plan view of a plate guide embodiment according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of FIG. ll;
FIG. 3 is an end view showing the guide positioning ram mechanism in relation to the roll table;
FIG. 4 is a partial plan showing the arrangement of an auxiliary slab turning toe mounted on the guide; and
FIG. Sis a section on the line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
Referring first to FIG. 1, the guide means 14 is in suspended relation over the table rolls I2, having a slab or plate front guide surface I6, and being supported from a pair of horizontally extending rams 18 by way ofa pinned connection I9 with brackets I9 attached to the main guide member. A drag link 20 is pivotally connected at 22 with the guide M, having an outward face portion 21 in cooperative plate guiding relation with the adjacent of the surface portion 16 of the main guide 14. The drag link 20 is supported at its inboard end by a pinned connection 23 to a slide 29, being mounted for sliding parallel with the table main axis. A longitudinal restraining link 24 mounted to a fixed pivot 26 inboard of the table rolls 12 has its outer end pivotally secured to the drag link 20 intermediate its ends.
Referring to FIG. 2, this shows the substantial section of the guide M, and the manner in which it is suspended clear of the table rolls 12, being recessed to clear the rolls.
Referring to FIG. 3, the guide support rams It], to which the guide I4 is pinned at 19, are each provided with a bottom guide wheel 35, a top guide wheel 36, and a toothed actuator pinion 3d in meshing relation with a rack portion 32 of the ram 13. Simultaneous rotation of the pinions 34 provides transverse positioning of the guide M in relation to the table. It is contemplated that additional transverse restraint of the guide M may be provided by auxiliary hydraulic pistons in backup relation with the rams 18.
The pivotal suspension of guide M from the rams 18 permits ready repositioning of the guide M, by pivoting to one side of the mill table, for free access to the table rolls I2, on release of the drag link 20 at its connecting point 22.
Turning to FIGS. 6 and 5, there is illustrated an embodiment turning toe M movable into the illustrated operative position in which the cranked impact surface 417 extends outwardly of the guide flank, being attached by way of picot mount 48 to the guide 14. The cranked portion $7 is keyed to the face of the guide 114, when in the downward or operative position.
The symmetry of the subject arrangement facilitates the provision of side guides on both sides of a rolling table.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, we have explained the principle and operation of our invention and have illustrated and described what we consider to represent the best embodiment thereof.
