Abstract
A fitting for lashing containers, which comprises: a top plate, a centering portion and a locking part fixedly secured to each other, which fitting will be prevented from tilting in the event of a lashing force directed via the top plate substantially to the outer surface of the corner-fitting of a container, even if this force deviates considerably from the vertical.

PATENTEDMAR 7 I972 SHEET 2 UF 2 7 %r a A iys H CONTAINER LASHING The invention relates to a fitting for lashing containers having comer-fittings, in which corner-fittings there is an opening in at least one outer surface, said fitting comprising a top plate which can be mounted on an apertured outer surface of a corner-fitting, a centering portion fitting in at least one direction between two wall portions of the opening in the corner-fitting, and a locking part, said top plate, centering portion and locking part being fixedly secured to each other, while said locking part projects relative to the centering portion, said projection in mounted condition engaging under a rim of the opening, while the top plate is provided with a connecting member for lashing means.
In a prior fitting of this type the round centering portion is provided with diametrically extending locking parts which can be inserted in longitudinal direction of the elongated openings, while the fitting can be retained against removal by swivelling about a vertical axis.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and lightweight fitting of the type defined above, which remains in position even in the case of forces which are not entirely vertical.
To that end, in such a fitting the centering portion is at least partly in accordance with the opening in a corner-fitting to prevent swivelling about the axis normal to the top plate, and the locking part solely projects on one side relative to the centering portion, so that the fitting can only be mounted and removed by tilting around the relevant opening rim.
Such a fitting will be prevented from tilting in the event of a lashing force directed via the top plate substantially to the outer surface of the corner-fitting, normal to the top plate, even if this force deviates considerably from the vertical, so that the fitting will be firmly anchored in the corner-fitting, while rotation about a vertical axis is effectively prevented in the event of oblique lashing forces.
The invention will now be explained with reference to the drawing, in which an exemplary embodiment is shown.

FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 are a front elevational view, a top view and a side elevational view, respectively, of such a fitting.
Containers are often provided with one or more standardized corner-fittings, one of which is designated by l. The comer-fittings are used in loading and unloading and for fastening the containers on freighters. Since use is often made here of twist-locks which fit relatively closely in openings of the corner-fittings, it should at any rate be prevented that the openings 2, 3 and 4 in the corner-fittings are damaged. Accordingly, it is unallowable to have a hook, such as 5, directly engage in an opening.
A fitting designated by 6 is composed of a top plate 7, a centering portion 8 and a locking means 9. The top plate 7 is flat and is contiguous to the top plane 10 of a corner-fitting. To the top plate 7 there is furthermore connected a U-shaped somewhat bent clip 11. In the embodiment the ends of the U- shaped clip extend through a pair of openings in the top plate and these ends are welded to the upper part of the plate through the intermediary of two diabolo- shaped rings 12 or 13. Adjacent the ring 13 there is a link 14, which is adapted to cooperate with the hollow flank of the ring. To prevent loss of the link, a clip 15 is mounted on top of the link and welded to the ring 13 and the top plate 7.
The centering portion 8 is constructed such that it fits with slight clearance in the opening 4 of the corner-fitting. in this case the locking member or flange 9 extends under one rim of the opening 4. For mounting and removing the fitting 6 on or from the corner-fitting, it has to be tilted about a longitudinal axis. To this end, the lower comer 16 of the centering portion 8 is rounded and said centering portion is obliquely removed at 17 on the side of the locking member 9. It will be clear that if vertical or somewhat oblique forces are exercised on the fittin via the hook 5, it is ressed with its top plate 7 on the top p ane 10 of the corneritting, while the pro ecting flange 9 prevents the fitting from tilting out of the opening 4 about a horizontal transverse axis normal to the rim of the locking member or flange 9. It is immaterial whether the flange 9, seen in FIG. 2, is provided on the left or on the right-hand side, while seen in FIG. 3 the flange can possibly also be provided on the upper side. However, in view of the varying length dimensions of the, for that matter, standardized opening 4 the locking member 9 is preferably on a long side, as is also shown in the drawing.
If a number of containers are positioned in side-by-side relationship, the corner-fittings will adjoin in pairs. If the link 14 is put over the ring 12 of an adjacent fitting to an adjoining container, the containers will be coupled in transverse direction. Although in the event of tensile forces in the link the fitting could be tilted out of the corner-fitting, this is prevented by the tensile forces transferred to the fitting via the hook 5. Owing to the somewhat bent shape of the U-shaped clip, sufficient room is provided between the container and the clip, so that a hook or a different connecting means can be put through the clip.

l. A fitting for lashing containers having comer-fittings, in which corner-fittings there is an opening in at least one outer surface, said fitting comprising a top plate which can be mounted on an apertured outer surface of a corner-fitting, a centering portion fitting in at least one direction between two wall portions of the opening in the corner-fitting, and a locking part, said top plate, centering portion and locking part being fixedly secured to each other, while said locking part projects relative to the centering portion, said projection in mounted condition engaging under a rim of the opening, while the top plate is provided with a connecting member for lashing means, characterized in that in such a fitting the centering portion is at least partly in accordance with the opening in a corner-fitting to prevent swivelling about the axis normal to the top plate, and the locking part solely projects on one side relative to the centering portion, so that the fitting can only be mounted and removed by tilting around the relevant opening rim.
Claims (1)
1. A fitting for lashing containers having corner-fittings, in which corner-fittings there is an opening in at least one outer surface, said fitting comprising a top plate which can be mounted on an apertured outer surface of a corner-fitting, a centering portion fitting in at least one direction between two wall portions of the opening in the corner-fitting, and a locking part, said top plate, centering portion and locking part being fixedly secured to each other, while said locking part projects relative to the centering portion, said projection in mounted condition engaging under a rim of the opening, while the top plate is provided with a connecting member for lashing means, characterized in that in such a fitting the centering portion is at least partly in accordance with the opening in a cornerfitting to prevent swivelling about the axis normal to the top plate, and the locking part solely projects on one side relative to the centering portion, so that the fitting can only be mounted and removed by tilting around the relevant opening rim.
