EDWARD O. HOLDEN, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
MARKING-TOOL FOR BOOT OR SHOE SOLES.
SPEciPIcATioN forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,649, dated June 14, 1887.
Application filed January 2-2, 1886. Serial No. 189,427. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. HOLDEN, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and Common wealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain Improved Marking-Tool for Marking with Ink the Bottoms of Boot or Shoe Soles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to means for marking with ink the soles of boots or shoes, and the nature thereof is fully described and specifically claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool complete. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the end cap detached and shown in detail.
The tube or barrel A is designed to serve as a handle by which to manipulate the instrument, and is further provided with a center' bore, B, constituting a chamber for the reception of the ink. The chamber is closed atone end by a suitable stopper, 0, after the ink has been introduced into the chamber. At the opposite end of the barrel-cylinder is a sliding cap or plate, E, which is shown in detail in Fig. 4. This cap is arranged to slide in a dovetail groove formed in the end of the barrel-cylinder. This cap is fitted tightly in this groove, so as to be held in position by friction. Said cap is provided with a chamber, a, from which small openings or holes extend downward through the bottom edge of the cap. When the cap is in position on the barrel-cylinder A, the chamber a coincides with and extends into the chamber B, (see Fig. 3,) thereby allowing the liquid ink to pass downward through the openings 6 to the bottom edge face of the cap, and in operation the tool is drawn around over the edge of the sole with the bottom of the cap bearing upon the leather, and thus allowing the ink to be drawn out by frictional contact with the lcather surface.
Secured to the barrel-cylinder by means of screw f is a guard-plate, h, the end of which bears upon the edge of the sole while the bottom of the sole is being striped near the edge. This guide-plate serves to keep the tool, in
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof.
. position and cause it to follow the outline of the sole, and in this sense it might be termed a follower. This plateis adjustable on the screw f, so as to regulate the distance at which the stripe shall be drawn from the outer edge of the sole.
Between the end of the plate hand the bottom of the cap E is a groove, a, formed by cutting into the barrel cylinder at this point. This groove operates to break all connection between the cap E and plate h, and thus to keep the ink from getting onto the end of the plate h, and perhaps thereby spoiling or damaging the sole by staining it in the wrong place.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Ina markingtool, the combination of the barrel A, perforated cap E, and guide-plateh.
2. The handle or barrel A, having chamber 13 for ink, and provided with the groove a, combined with perforated cap E and guide or follower h.
3. In a marking-tool, a chamber for contain ing the fluid, a cap-piece, E, carried thereby,
having discharge-openings for the distribution of the ink, said openings extending laterally in relation to the handle A, in combination with a guide-plate carried by said chamber, substantially as described.
4.. The cap E, having perforations c, and chamber a, combined with the handle A, having ink-chamber B, all substantially as described.
5. In a marking-tool, the elongated barrel A, forming the handle of the device, a cappiece carried thereby, having discharge-openings extending laterally in relation to the handle, substantially as described.
6. In a marking-tool, a chamber carrying a distributing-surface adapted to bear directly upon the material and provided with dischargeopenings, substantially as and for the purpose described.
EDWARD o. HOLDEN.
