oHAELEs L. EETTs, on NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR To THE R. E. DIETZ COMPANY, or sAME PLAoE.
GLOBE-LIFTING DEVICE FOR LANTERNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,570, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed December 22, 1886. Serial No. 222,324. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
'Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. BETTs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Globe-Lifting Devices for Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to that class of lanterns wherein the globe is arranged for rising perpendicularly from its seat, together with the supporting-plate, and has for its object the provision of aneat, simple, cheap, and
durable device, whereby the globe and plate may be pushed upward from the bottom and held in an elevated position when it is desired to reach the burner.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a lantern wherewith my improvement is employed. Fig. 2 isasectional view of aportion of one of the side tubes or lantern-frame and a portion of the globe-supporting plate, illustrating the construction and arrangement tional view at line w as, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a front view of the inside of a tube, showing the slideway for the bracket.
Like letters of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
, A is the base of the lantern, and B the side tubesor frame.
0 is the bell which engages with the upper extremity of the globe D, said bell sliding upon a central tube, E, and being provided with a spring, F, for holding the bell and globe when depressed.
- G is the globe-supporting plate, provided with a slot, g, for the reception of the extremity of the lifting-arm.
Upon one of the tubes or at the side of the lantern-frame is a slideway, H, wherein a bracket, I, having a projecting arm, K, is removably placed. The arm K extends beneath the globe-supporting plate G, the extremity thereof engaging with the slot 9 in said plate,
as shown.
L is a finger-rest to assist the manipulation in raising the globe.
When the parts are assembled for use, as above set forth, the globe, together with its supporting-plate, may be easily raised from the burner-cone for the purpose of lighting. The elevating mechanism is simple and will not materially add to the cost of constructing the lantern. The bracket may be removed from the slideway for packing, cleaning, &c., and the device will be found admirably adapted to the uses and purposes for which it is intended.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to se- A cure by Letters Patent, is
l. A lantern-frame consisting of base A, side tubes, B, central tube, E, bell G, sliding on 6 said central tube, and vertically-movable supporting-plate G, in combination with globe D, held between said supporting-plate and sliding bell, slideway H on one of said side tubes,
and bracket I, sliding in said slideway, said bracket extending beneath said plate G and detachable both from said plate and slideway, substantially as set forth.
2. A lantern-frame consisting of base A, sidetubes, B, central tube, E, bell O, sliding on 7 5 said central tube, and vertically-movable supporting-plate G, in combination with globe D, held between said plate G and bell O, a ma nipulating-bracket extending beneath said supporting-plate for raising the same, said bracket sliding in suitable ways arranged on the lantern-frame, and a fixed finger-rest, L, on the lantern-fra1ne, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
