*NIELS PETER SEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AN D RASMUS PETERSEN, OF
- RAOINE, WISCONSIN.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,541, dated dune '7, 1887.
Application filed March 19, 1887l Serial No. 231,509. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, NIELs PETERSEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and RASMUS PETERSEN, of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar- Couplings; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, elear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the draw head of a common pin-and-link car-coupling provided with our improved link attachment,
1 indicates the draw-head, which is formed with the usual recess, 2, and which is provided with the common coupling-pin 3 and with the link 4, all of which parts are of the usual constructio'n found in couplings of this class.
A plate or block, 5, is inserted transversely in the link, having two notches, 6, in its opposite edges, into which the side bars of t-helink fit, and the portion of the block or plate between the two notches is provided With two wedge-shaped lugs,7, projecting in opposite directions from the faces of the plate or block. The upper end of the block or plate is provided with an upwardly-projecting handle, 8, by means of which the block may be handled, and it will be seen that when this block or plate is secured in a link a person may enter between the cars and guide the link into the recess of the draw-head of the car being coupled, the notches in the side edges of the plate or block retaining the side bars of the link, and the wedge-shaped blocks or projections upon its faces preventing the plate or block from turning in the link. In this manner a person may guide the link of a coupling into the draw-head of another coupling without any dangerof'injuring the hands by being caught between the draw-heads, as is liableto happen when coupling with the common pinand-link coupling; and the attachment is of such a simple construction that it may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost and will be very durable.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. An attachment for a pin-aud-link coupling, consisting of a plate or block formed with two notches in the opposite side edges, and two projections upon the faces between the notches, and with an upwardly-projecting handle, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a common link, of a plate or block inserted in the link and having notches in its side edges fitting upon the side bars of the link, and having wedge-shaped projections upon its faces between the notches, and formed with an up wardly-projecting handle, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
