9 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures PATENTEI] F E8 2 2 I972 FIGA INVENTOR. ADAM A. SCHILLER 1W2 JZM Attorneys CARTRIDGE-TYPE CUTTING TOOL WITH INSERT LOCK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a cutting tool, and more particularly to a rotary cutting tool for use in boring and the like, with provision for clamping one or more throwaway cutting inserts in a cartridge mounted in the tool body.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The invention contemplates the use of a removable cartridge which is disposed in a recess in the tool head. The cartridge is adapted to hold the insert therein, and a rotary cam lock secures the insert within the cartridge and also clamps the cartridge into the tool head. An additional cartridge clamp is also provided.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3--3 of FIG. 2.
and showing the cam lock in released position;
FIG. 4 is a section similar to FIG. 3 and showing the cam lock in insert-holding position; and
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 2, showing a cartridge mounted with a different axial rake.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT As shown in the drawing, the invention is embodied in a tool comprising a tool body I having an inner end portion adapted to be secured to the spindle of a suitable rotary drive mechanism (not shown). The outer cutting end portion of tool body 1 forms a generally cylindrical head 2 having an outer annular peripheral surface 3.
Head 2 is adapted to receive one or more cartridge assemblies 4. For this purpose, and for each assembly, a generally longitudinal cartridge-receiving recess or groove 5 is provided in surface 3. Groove 5 may be formed by boring or some other suitable process and, while it is shown as cylindrical, it may be other than cylindrical without departing from the spirit of the invention. Each groove thus forms an interruption in surface 3.
Cartridge assembly 4 is adapted to receive a removable cutting insert or bit 6 and hold it in head 2. The assembly comprises a cartridge body 7 of generally cylindrical shape which is dimensioned to fit within groove 5 in a complimentary manner. Body 7 is provided with a longitudinal outwardly facing slot 8 for holding a bit 6 therein, with the slot having opposed walls 9, 10. An adjustable stop 11 is threaded into body 7 for seating the bit.
For purposes of locking bit 6 within assembly 4 and for simultaneously locking the assembly within groove 5, locking means are provided which tighteningly bears on the groove wall and bit. This means comprises a generally semicircular ringlike cam lock 12 which is disposed in a transverse slot I3 formed in the inner wall of body 7 and which communicates with slot 8. Cam lock I2 has a curved bearing edge surface 14 of slightly shorter radius than groove 5, an end bearing portion 15 disposed adjacent bit 6, and an opposite end portion or face 16 for engagement by a setscrew l7 threaded into body 7.
To install cartridge assembly 4 in tool head 2, it is slid into groove 5 so that it is relatively loosely positioned therein, as shown in FIG. 3. Tightening of setscrew 17 will cause cam lock I2 to rotate in slot 13 until portion 15 engages bit 6 and forces it against wall 9. At the same time, surface I4 of cam lock 12 will be forced against the wall of groove 5, as shown in FIG. 4, thus securing the entire assembly in place.
When groove 5 is circular, the radial rake of bit 6 can be varied by providing a suitably positioned flat 18 on the outer sidewall of body 7 and by tightening a setscrew 19 in head 2 against the flat. Screw I9 also holds body 7 in place so that a worn bit can be released and replaced without releasing the entire assembly from groove 5.
The axial rake of bit 6 can also be varied by varying the angle of groove 5, as shown in FIG. 5.
The invention provides a unique cartridge structure for cutting tools which use removable bits.
Various modes of carrying out the invention are contemplated as being within the scope of the following claims particularly pointing out and distinctly claiming the subject matter which is regarded as the invention.
