Description
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELsoN NEWMAN, or SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, AssIcNon OF TWO-THIRDS TO GEORGE A. SANDERS AND SAMUEL J. WILLETT, BOTH or SAME PLACE.
M AC HINE FOR SHARPENING HORSESHOE-CALKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 364,280, dated June 7., 1887,
Application filed December 20,1886. Serial No. 222,038. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NELsoN NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sharpening Horseshoe-Oalks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for sharpening the calks of horseshoes; and it consists in the-peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particu larl y pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of ahorseshoe-calk-sharpening machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same, taken on the line m acofFig. 1,
4 and showing the manner of applying the ma chine to the horseshoe calk- Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 1.
A represents a curved head, which is provided on one side, at its extremities, with projecting ears or flanges B, the opposing sides 0 of which converge toward the curved outer edge of the head and are provided with grooves D. From the rear side of the curved head, at the center thereof, projects a right-angled lever, E.
F represents a straight lever, which is pivoted to the lever E at the angle formed in the latter bya pivotal bolt or pin, G. One end of the lever F extends over the curved head and is broadened to form a jaw, H, the outer end of which, on the side opposing the curved head, is provided with a recess, I, the upper side of which is inclined, as at K. A boss or offset, L, is made on the outside of the jaw H, at the center thereof, and through the said boss and jaw is made a threaded opening,in which works a set-screw, L.
M represents a curved file adapted .to fit on the curved head A, and having its ends provided with tongues N to enter the grooves D,
the usual manner practiced by farriers, with the shoe upturned, and the lever F is grasped with one hand and the inclined side K of the recess in the jaw is caused to bear against the inner side of the calk, asshown at Fig. 2. This causes the curved file to bear on the outer side of the calk, and the operator then grasps the leverE with his other-hand and works the same back and forth on its pivot, thus causing the head A to oscillate, and thereby causing. the
teeth of the file to out on the outer side of the calk to sharpen the same.
The function of the set-screw L is to cause the face of the file to continue to bear against the calk as the sharpening proceeds, the said screw being of course tightened from time to time.
Thepressureof thejaw against the inner side of the calk holds the hoof steady, so that the oscillation of the head A does not shake and wrench the hoof and thereby annoy the horse and make him restless and nervous during the ope'ration-an advantage which is not, so far as I am aware, possessed by other machines of this class now in common use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a horseshoe-call: sharpener, the combination of the'lever F, having thejaw at one end to bear against one side of the calk, the curved flattened head A, )ivoted to one side of the lever F and having the projecting lever E to oscillate the head, and the detachable file secured to the head A and bearing between the opposing sides of the said head and the jaw,
substantially asdescribed.
2. In a horseshoe-call: sharpener, the fiattened head A, having the converging ears or flanges on one side, and the projecting lever E, in combination with the lever F, pivoted to one side of the head and having the jaw to bear against one side of the calk, and the file having its ends adapted to fit between the opposing inner sides of the ears or flanges, whereby the said file is secured detachably to the head on the side thereof opposed to the jaw, substantially as described.
3. In a horseshoe ealk sharpener, the combination of the lever F, having the jaw at one end provided with the recess I to receive one side of the ealk and the set-screw, the oscillating flattened head A,pivoted to the lever F and having the projecting lever E and the ears or NELSON NElVMANa \Vitnesses:
