To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY KAUTz,a citizen of the United States, residing at Litiz, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylva- 5 nia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Bundling Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in machines for pressing cigars, in order to tie to the same into bundles, the object being to make such a machine of simple construction, and one in which the necessary vertical and horizontal pressure will be produced simultaneously.

The invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure '1 represents'a perspective view of the invention. Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of the machine, ofgeneral rectangular form and with its front side open, or not provided with a wall. a is one end wall of the said frame, having secured to itastandard, a, the upper end of which is bifurcated,

and has pivoted between its arms the end of a lever, B, upon which is pivoted a depending red, I), the arms of the bifurcated upper end of which lie on each side of the lever.

b is a pressure foot or disk on the lower end The said rod-hangs about midway between the end wall of the frame and the movable partition orwall O, the inner edge of which is provided with threaded recesses to engage the set-screws c, which pass through the longitudinal slots cin the rear wall of the frame and have washers between said slots and their heads, as shown in the drawings.

D is a longitudinal shaft having its inner end furnished with a disk-like head, d, which rotates in a chamber formed by the wall or partition 0, and the collar (1, having its interior hollow to form said chamber, and with the neck d of the shaft turning in its central opening to the outer side of the chamber. The outer end of the shaft D turns in a bearing 5 formed in the end of the main frame, opposite the wall a, and upon said shaft, at its center part, is the squared portion E, which passes through a correspondiugly-shaped longitudi nal opening, 6, in a cylindrical block, F, which block has upon it a cam-thread, f, that engages in an inclined groove, 9, in a block secured to the floor of the main frame.

h is a circumferential shoulder at the inner end of the squared portion E of the shaft D, 6 and H is a laterallyextending arm secured to the shaft, to the inner side of said shoulder, and having connected loosely to a pin, near its end, a link-rod h, the upper slotted end of which passes over the end of the lever B, and is pivoted thereto, as shown, and rendered adjustable thereon by means of the opening shown in the drawings, in any of which open ings the pivotal pin will fit.

The lever B and the rod 12 are also rendered mutually adjustable on each other by means of adj listing-holes in each and a pivotal pin that will fit into corresponding holes of each series, as shown. Both'the end wall, a, and the partition C have the clips 2' at tached to their lower inner edges. The said clips are triangular in cross-section, as shown, to better support the cigars set upon them.

I is a handle secured to the upper surface of the cylindrical cam-block F, and by means of 8: which the latter is rotated back and fOllJll, the rear wall of the machine, on the adjacent side of the movable partition 0, being cut down to allow of its being turned far enough back.

' J is the follower, composed of the rect-anguo lar block 3', having the clip j, triangular in cross-section, secured to its outer edge, and of the sheet-metal engaging-plate j having its ends 9' bent around the ends of the block j in such manner as to be adjustable inward and 5 outward thereon. The said plate has secured to its under surface a clip, j", in all. respects similar but opposite to the clip j. The said two clips are also similar to the clips 2'.

By pulling out or pushing in the plate j the I00 follower can be extended or contracted. WVhen so extended, a piece, K, having a similar 1ongitudinal section to that of the block j, is engaged upon the plate j and pins k 70, standing from its inner edge, engage in openings in the meeting edge of the block 9', so as to bind the pieeeKand said block together. The follower is thus adjusted to different distances between the wall a and the partition 0, which themselves are adjusted to press larger or smaller bundles of cigars.

In pressing the bundles the wall and partition are set apart a distance of about onequarter of an inch greater than the width of the bOX in which the cigars are to be packed.

The ribbon is then laid upon the iioor of the frame and its ends brought up to the top of the end wall, a, and the partition 0, respectively. The handle I is then turned forward, bringing down the arm E, which, by means of the linkrod h, lever B, rod 1), and prcsser-disk Z1, depresses the follower J, which has been placed below said disk and above the cigars, so that the latter are compressed vertically thereby. The horizontal pressure of the cigars is accomplished by means of the movable partition 0, which is driven against them by the inner end of the cylindrical cam-block impinging against the shoulder h of the shaft D. When the said partition is moved sufficiently toward the end wall, 'a, it is held in position by the set-screws e, the follower removed, and the ribbon tied, completing the bundle. \Vhen the necessary number of bundles are made, they are packed in the box in the usual manner.

Having described my invention, I claim--- 1. In a machine for pressing cigars in bundles, the combination of the main frame, thev movable partition, the shaft having one end journaled in the movable partition and the other end arranged to slide in a bearing in the proper end wall of the main frame and provided with a squared portion and circumferential shoulder between said end wall and the partition, the cam-block provided with the inclined cam-groove and secured to the floorofthe frame,andthe cylindrical block pro vided with the cam-thread to engage said camgroove and with a central longitudinal opening to slide on the squared part of the shaft and the lever, wherebythe cylindrical block is rotated, and, sliding 011 the shaft, impinges against the shoulder thereon and moves the partition toward the proper end wall, so as to compress the cigars between said wall and itself, substantiallyas specified.

2. In a machine to compress cigars in bundles, the combination of the main frame, the lever having its outer end pivoted to the frame, the rod pivoted to and depending from said lever, the presser-foot on the lower end of said rod, the follower construetedto be extended and contracted, and mechanism, substantially as described, whereby said lever may be depressed to bring the follower to .bear on the cigars, substantially as specified.

In a machineto compress cigars in bundles, the combination, with the main frame, the pivoted lever-rod extending therefrom, presser-foot, and follower, all constructed substantially as described, of the shaft having the squared portion and journaled in the main frame and also in a partition, 0, the cylindrical block on the squared part of said shaft, the handle secured to said block, and the linlrrod connecting said shaft with the outer end of the pivoted lever, so that the latter will be depressed by rotating the cylindrical block and shaft by means of the handle and will press the follower vertically downward upon the cigars, substantially as specified.

4. The combination of the main frame A,

having the end wall or bearing, a, the movable partition 0, the lever'B, the prcsser-foot, and follower constructed substantially as specified, the shaft having the squared portion and circumferential shoulder,the cylindrical block on said shaft, provided with the cam-thread, the block secured to the main frame and provided with a cam-groove engaging said thread, and the link-rod connecting the shaft with the end of the pivoted lever, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
