CONSTRUCTION 0F WALLS.

UNITED STATESy PATENT OFFICE.
'CHARLES LI.4 EEOST, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.`
CoNsTRUCTloN OF WALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364.241, dated June 7, 1887.
(No model.)
.To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. FROST, residing at Chicago, in the county'of Cook and State ofv Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement inthe Construction of Buildings, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-n Y Figure 1 is a vertical crosssection through a brick wall containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, the two inside and upper layers of brick being removed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective showing my anchor or binder.
My improvement is, primarily, designed to be used in connection withbrick buildings which have a facing of pressed brick.
The object of the. invention is to provide improved devices for binding the outer courses of the brick to the inside courses Without laying any of the brickY transversely, which I ae complish by providing the uneXposed ends of the outer courses or layers of brick with vertical grooves, Vwhich can be readily formed in the brick in the process of manufacture, and by providing binders or anchors of peculiar construction, all as illustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter described.
That which I claim as new will be set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents one of the brick to be used in the outer courses of the wall, each end of which brick is provided, as shown, with a vertical groove, a, which may be about one-half of au inch in depth.
B is an anchor or binder, which can be con* veniently made of cast metal. The vertical end piece, b, of this binder is adapted to be inserted into grooves in the ends of two adjoining bricks. 'Ihe iat portion c of the 4binder is designed to be placed, in use, be-
tween thc ends of two adjoining bricks, and the portion d of the binder is designed to rest upon the bricks in the second or inner course. e is an upward projection from the inner end of the binder, which projection is designed to be embedded in the mortar between two layers shown and described, the anges of the vertical portion b of each binder will be in the grooves in the ends of the facing-brick, or in the mortar therein, and the projection d will be embedded in the mortar of an adjoining course, and the facing-brick and the brick behind the same will be rmly bound and anchored together.
I have shown in the drawings aso-called twelve-inch brick wall. The outer courses or wall will usually be formed of pressed brick, the inside brick will be common brick, and the two inner walls may be bound together byA laying the brick transversely from time to time, as is common, which is not show n in the drawings.
My invention can be used with a so-ealled eight-inch7 wall, if desired, in which ease the facing or outervwall will be bound to the inner wall, as before described, by means of my binders or anchors.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wall, the co1nbination,with the outerl and inner courses of bricks, of a binder, B, having a flat plate on the end which lies in vertical grooves in adjacent bricks of the outer course, a thiuvertical portion which lies between the vertical faces of said bricks, and a flat portion which lies between the horizontal faces of bricks in second or inner course, sub- Stantially as described. p
2. The binder B, having a vertical part, b, at one end, a flat thin vertical part, c, a flat horiiontal part, d, and a projection, e, substautially as and for the purpose specified.
CHARLES H. FROST.
