BUTTON-HOLE STRIP FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,148, dated May 31, 1887. Application filed Aprilll, 1887. Serial No.23-L4t17. (No model.) I

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE VALIANT, of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of Ontario, and in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Hole Strips for Boots or Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figurelshows a perspective view of my flypiece or strip as attached to the vamp or quarter'of a boot or shoe; Fig. 2, a similar 'view of the same from the rear or inner side, and Fig. 3 a detail sectional view of the strip or fly-piece and aportion of the vamp or quarter.

The object of my invention is to provide an improvement in button-hole strips or flypieces, and in the manner of attaching the button-hole strips or fly-pieces to the Vamps or quarters of boots or shoes; and to this end my invention'consists in the improved strip or fly-piece, in the combination of the same with the vamp or quarter of a boot or shoe, and in the method of attaching the fly or strip to such Vamp or quarter, substantially as hereinafter specified.

In the drawings, A designates the vamp or quarter of a boot or shoe, and B the buttonhole strip or fiy-piece attached thereto. In another application for patent filed and now pending I have shown and described abuttonhole strip or fly and aneyelet or lace-hole strip split along its inner edge, where it is to be attached to the vamp or quarter, so as to form two attaching-flaps along such edge.

The particular object of my present invention is to avoid the necessity of so splitting the edge of the fly or strip, which necessitates a special machine, and also to make it possible to utilize for the strips or flies pieces of leather such as could not be split without impairing their strength too much.

Instead of making the button-hole strip or fly-piece B of several layers of thin leather or other material, as has been done heretofore, I secure a fly or strip of greater strength and durability by using for it a single thickness of strong leather, which can be specially prepared for use.

In carrying out my present invention I take a strip of leather of the desired strength and toughness which has been cut of the proper.

resented or imitated by embossing, as shown in the drawings. Such embossing is of course not necessary, but gives an ornamental appearance to the button-hole fly or strip.

' Wherethestrip is to be used for mens shoes or boots, instead of being scalloped, its outer edge is simply beaded, the beading being done by embossing without any stitching.

Instead of splitting the inner or attaching edge of the strip, as described and shown in my other pending application referred to, I bevel or skive it down on the inner or flesh side, as shown in the drawings, the skiving or bev eling being so done as to leaveonly a thin edge along the strip,while leaving the outer or grain side of the leather intact. edge of the strip thus made thin it can be turned under or folded on itself, as is necessary -to make a good seam, without making such seam heavy and bungling. This turning under or folding of the edge is desirable and necessary in order to enable the. strip to be attached to the vamp or quarter edge, as shown in the drawings,with a neat seam,in which the With the extreme thin extreme edge of the leather is concealed and protected. As the skiving of the strip edge. makes such edge so thin as to materially lessen its strength, I fasten a strip, 0, of strong tough material to the under or inner side of the strip or fly B by means of the stitches c c. To make such stitching ornamental in appearance on. the outer side of the fly or strip B, I prefer to scallop 7 time.

In using my button-hole strip or fly with its re-enforcing andlining strip 0,.theinner skived edge of the button-hole strip proper is turned or folded under,as shown in the drawings,and such folded edge is fastened by stitches D D to the edge of the shoe quarter or vamp A. The edge of the re-enforcing strip O,projecting as it does beyond the seam-connecting strip B with the vamp, is then attached to the vamp or quarter by the line of stitching E. P Where there is a lining, A, to the vamp or quarter, as shown in Fig. 1, its edge is caused to project with the edge of the vamp over the edge of strip 0, so that the stitching E passes through the strip, the lining, and the Vamp, and serves to fasten all together at the same The edge of the lining is then covered and protected by the edge of strip 0, as shown. A line of stitching, F, is also used parallel to the seam connecting the vamp and the folded edge of the strip B, and on the opposite side thereof from the stitching E, Said stitching Fpasses through the strip 0 and the skived edge of strip B,and fastens the strips together in addition to the stitching 0, already described.

The re-en forcing strip 0. is preferably, as shown in the drawings, skived or made thinner from the edge which projects beyond the edge of the strip B to the edge-which is stitched to such latter strip. Its thickest portion then comes below the thinnest portion of the strip B, and the stitching F fastens the two strips together at a point between their thickest and thinnest portions.

With my completed butto11-hole fly or stri made as described and shown, the outer portion of the strip, in which are cut the buttonholes, consists of a single thickness of strong tough leather, while the inner or attaching edge consists of two layers or attaching-flaps of material, of which the inner or under flap forms a lining for the outer one.

For ordinary purposes I find that it is suflicicnt for properly covering the seam by which the outer flap is attached to the quarter or vamp edge that theinner or under flap should project beyond the outer one about a quarter of an inch.

Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim is- L' Abutton-hole fly or strip formed of a single strip of material provided along its attaching edge with a re-enforcing strip of mater-ial, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A button-hole fly or strip formed of a single strip of material provided along its inner edge with a re-enforcing strip attached to and projecting beyond the edge of the main strip, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

3. A button-hole fly or strip consisting of a single strip of material skived thinner along its inner or attaching edge, and the strip attached to the under or inner side of the main strip and projecting beyond its skived edge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 4. In combination with the main portion of a button-hole fly or strip consisting of a single strip of material skived or made thin along its inner or attaching edge, the strip attached to the under side of the thicker part .of the main portion of the strip and project ing beyond the skived edge of the same, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described. A

5. In combination withthe main portion of the button-hole fly or strip, the vamp or quarter of a boot or shoe, stitching fastening the margin of the main portion of the strip to the vamp or quarter edge, the strip attached to the under side of such main portion, and

stitching attaching the vamp or quarter to such strip, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

6. In combination with the main portion of the buttonhole strip and the re-enforcing strip attached to the under side thereof and projecting beyond its edge, the quarter of aboot or shoe, stitching fastening the edge of the main portion of the strip to the quarter edge, and stitching fastening the edge of the re-enforcing strip to the quarter, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

7. In combination with the main portion of the button-hole fly or strip, skived thin along its inner end and having such edge folded under the re'enforcing strip attached to the under side of such main portion and projecting beyond its edge, the quarter of a boot or shoe,

stitching fastening the folded edge of the main 1 portion of the strip to the quarter edge, stitching fastening the re-enforcing strip to the quarter, and a line of stitching'passing through the two strips, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
