HENRY 13. FORD, OF NFRV YORK, N. Y.,
PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNOR TO PERKINS 8t WELSH, OF
s'AME PLACE.
CYLINDER FOR AlR-PUMPS AND AIR-COMPRESSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.363,453, dated May 24, 1887.
- Application filed October 18, 1886. Serial No. 216,106. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. FORD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cylinders of air or other gas compressors, whereby water is caused more efficiently to circulate through said rod, piston, and jacket for the purpose of cooling said parts.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the mechanism as more particularly hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of my apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line w w of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is the compressor-cylinder. Bis a piston in said cylinder. 0 is the piston-rod. D is the water-jacket surrounding the cylinder A.
U The piston and piston-rod are made hollow.
Outside of and communicating with the waterjacket D is a small auxiliary pump-cylinder, E. This pump has also a hollow piston, F, and a hollow piston-rod, G. Piston-rod G is rigidly connected by a tubular connection, H, inany suitable way with the main piston-rod 0; hence the piston F moves in its cylinder E simultaneously with the movement of the piston B in the cylinder A. Of course, if it be desired that the piston F shall have a shorter stroke than the piston B, any suitable reducing-gear may be used to convey motion from the main to the auxiliary piston-rod, and in such case the tube H may be made of rubber or any other suitable flexible material. In my present drawings 1' show, however, that the piston F has a stroke equal in length to that of piston, B, a break being made across both cylinders A and E to indicate this. The small piston F is hollow, and has a valve, I, which opens inwardly.
J is a pipe entering the small cylinder E. K is a valve opening into said cylinder.
L is a valve opening into the pipe M, which passes into the water-jacket D, and nearly to the end of the same.
The valves I, K, and L are here shown as simple clap-valves; but of course they may be of any other known construction.
Within the main piston-rod O is a pipe, N, which passes through said rod and communicates with the interior of the piston B. O is an opening between the interior of said piston and the annular space P in the piston-rod inclosing the pipe N. The outer end of the pis ton-rod O is closed. A break is shown in the rod 0 to indicate that the pipe N here extends through its whole length. Said pipe may be provided with a flexible extension at Q, which I will not interfere with the reciprocation of the piston-rod. well-known construction.
The operation of the above-described mechanism is as follows: When the piston B is moving. outward-that is, from left to right in the drawings-the piston F in cylinder E moves in the same direction. ton then closes, the valve K opens and the valve L shuts. Water is then drawn into the cylinder E. On the return-stroke of the main piston Bthat is, from right to left in the drawings-the piston F moves in the same direction. The valve K then shuts and the valves I and L open. Consequently the wa ter which has been drawn into the cylinder E is now forced part through the tube M into the waterjacket D, through which it circulates and escapes by a pipe, (not shown) and part through the hollow piston G, whence it passes into the annular space P in the main piston-rod O. From the rod 0 the water passes through the opening 0 into the piston R is a stuffing-box of ordinary The valve in said pis- B, and from said piston into the tube N, and
. low piston and piston-rocl therein, combined supply the jacket with water and force the with an auxiliary pump-cylinder having a Water into and out of the main piston, sub- IO valvular connection with a water-supply, and stantially as described.
also with the water-'aeket of the main 0 linder, a hollow valvulzlr piston in said auxil lalry HENRY FORD pump-cylinder, and a hollow piston-rod there- Witnesses: for, connected with the hollow piston-rod of JAMEs S. GREVES, the main cylinder, and moving therewith to PARK BENJAMIN.
