Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEON BLUMENTAHL AND JOHN GALE STEELE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI,
. ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO MORRIS R. COHEN, OF SAME PLACE.
MEDICAL COMPOUND..
SPECIFICATION forming paut of Letters Patent No. 363,448, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed November 1, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LEON BLUMENTAHL and JOHN GALE STEELE,Of Kansas City, J ackson county,Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Medical Com pou nd,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to a novel remedy for diarrhea, dysentery, colic, and all such discases of the stomach and bowels, and to the to method of using the same, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
The compound and the method of making and using it are fully described in the following specification.
The compound is composed of the ingredients in about the proportions and quantities stated, but the process of compounding them may be varied as may be desired.
To prepare the compound, we take two ounces of beef-gall, which should be procured as fresh as possible; one ounce of digitalis; one ounce of y a le rlan, which may be either in its natural state orit may be in powdered form; one ounce sulphate of potash; one ounce peppermint-leaves; one dram opium; two pints ofalcohol; one-halfounce ofgum'asafetidmand one pint of old wine, which latter may be of any desired brand. Of these we form a tincture by mixing and allowing the mixture to stand in a warm place for about five days,
after which time it is ready to be used.
Our method of using this compound is as follows: We prepare a band or bandage of I flannel or of some suitable goods and immerse 3 it in the tincture for a period of about ten hours. Said band or beltof flannel is then re Serial No. 217,7l2. (No specimens.)
moved from the tincture, and dried in some way that will not disperse any of the medical properties which areheld by it-that is, it should not be dried in the sunshine, nor by 0 the fierce heat of a stove or furnace, but rather it should be allowed to remain in a comparatively cool place until perfectly dry. The flannel bandage thus prepared and charged with the tincture is then to be applied to the stomach of the patient, and secured thereon by means of suitable straps or strings, and permitted to remain from, say, one hour to three days, or until he obtains the desired relief. Used in this way we can say that the como pound will remedy the most aggravated case of diarrhea.
The action of the compound is quite mild and soothing, and hence it can be used by or upon a child only three months of age; or it may be used with much success by the oldest persons.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- The local remedy for diarrhea, 850., eon- (o sisting of beef-gall, digitalis, valerian, sulphate of potash, peppermint, opium, asafetida, alcohol, and wine, in the proportions substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
LEON BLUMENTAHL. JOHN GALE STEELE.
