Description
Y Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful WILLIAM F. LINE, OF
ANDREWS, INDIANA.
FUIVIIGATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,403, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed March 2B, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. LINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Andrews, in the county of Huntington, State of Improvements in Funligators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
rIhis invention relates to that class of fumigators adapted to burn pungent powders, Soc., the odors of which are directed to the destruction of vermin, insects, Ste., upon trees, plants, and clothing; and the object of the inventionis to provide a device for this purpose that is simple, cheap, portable, and effective.
Viththeabove objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction,
hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figurel is a front View in perspective of afumigator constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of the pan or retort upon which the powder or other matter is burned.
In carryingr out my invention, and in order to secure lightness and hence portability, I construct the same of sheet metal; and it consists ofthe cylinder A, at the front and near the bottoni of which is formed an opening having at its sides ways or guides A,either formed integral therewith by being struck up from the metal or secured thereon, as desired.
B ,represents a slidin g door, adapted to work within the grooves or ways A and admit of a desired blast of air or draft and the introduction of fuel.
C represents a hinged cover secured to the top of the cylinder, the hinge in this instance being formed by cutting ont the metal of the cover and bending the same to form loops or straps C,through which a pintle is passed, the free ends of the loops being secured by rivets.
At the rear of the cylinder A,and extending from the top thereof, is an uptake or chimney, D, through which the fumes of the destroying agent may passn Serial No. 232,163. (No model.)
Supported within the cylinder A,in any desired manner, above the iire-boX,in this instance byinternal cleats or ribs A2,(see dotted lines, Fig. 1,) is a pan or retort, E, in which the powder or destroying agent is burned. This pan E is of crescent shape, forming at one side an annular opening, E', through which the products of combustion may pass to the uptake, and is provided with a vertical flange, E2, the whole being removable for cleaning and other purposes from the opening in the top of the cylinder A.
Suitable handles, A3, for lifting and carrying the device, are provided at each side of the cylinder, whereby it may be transported from place to place and set under the trees and plants upon which the insects or vermin are.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the above description, in that it is only necessary tointroduce the destroying agent in the top of the cylinder upon the pan E and start the tire in the bottom of the cylinder. As the agent-for example, sulphur-is melted or burned by the heat, the fumes and odors thereof, together with the products of combustion, pass through the uptake and may be directed to any desired point.
If desired, a bail may be passed under the apparatus, extending from the cars or handles A3, and form a socket for a polc,by which it may be elevated to trees, &c.
Having described my invention and its operation, WhatI claim is The combination of the cylinder A, having internal supportingribs. A2, with the crescentshaped pan E, mounted on said ribs, and having/the flange E2 and fume and smoke space or opening E', substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. LINE.
Witnesses:
