BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Lock mountings for sheet metal doors have been provided heretofore but they were not entirely satisfactory for the reasons that the mountings did not prevent excess movement of the latch bolt in all directions in the door and could not be adjusted to accommodate locks having different backset dimensions.
THE PRIOR ART The prior art most nearly pertinent to the present invention and known to us is US. Pat. No. 3,455,078. Schlage US. Pat. Nos. Re. 21,024 and 21,025 show lock mountings similar in certain respects to the reinforced mountings of this invention.
SUMMARY The present invention provides a lock mounting in which a reinforcement may be placed in any one of several positions to accommodate locks having various backset dimensions. The reinforcement can be rigidly fixed in one position in the door and is capable of preventing excess motion of the latch bolt in any direction in the door.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The present invention will be better understood from the following specification and the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a sheet metal door with parts broken away to show one form of the reinforced lock mounting of the present invention:
FIG. 2 is a horizontal, fragmentary, sectional view, partly in plan, taken on line 2-2 of FIG. I; and
FIG. 3 is an exploded, perspective view of the lock mounting and reinforcement also showing the latter in assembled view in phantom with the former.
FIGS. 1 and 2 show a sheet metal door A composed of front and rear sheets 1 and 3. The longitudinal edges of the sheets 1 and 3 have opposed flanges 5 and 7 which are welded together, as by projection welding, after the manner shown in US. Pat. No. 3,455,078. The door A is preferably constructed in other respects substantially as shown in FIG. 2 of that patent.
The flanges 5 and 7 on one edge of the door are cut away to form a space to receive a projecting portion of the reinforced lock mounting indicated as an entirety in FIG. 3. This reinforced mounting is secured in position between and in contact with sheets 1 and 3 and in the indicated relation to the space in the flanges 5 and 7 by welding, for example, projection weldmg.
FIG. 2 also shows the assembly with door sheets 1 and 3 of the latch bolt actuating unit 8 and associated knobs 9, latch bolts 10, lock mounting 11 and lock mounting reinforcement 12.
Lock mounting II is quite like mounting 19 of US. Pat. No. 3,455,078, is generally U-shaped and includes a body 13 having a latch bolt-receiving opening 15 and substantially parallel legs 17 extending therefrom. The body portion 13 is sized substantially to fill the space provided therefor in the flanges 5 and 7 of the door and extends divergingly inwardly, as at 18, to clear the inner sides of those flanges. Projection welding points 19 on the opposite edges of the body 11 are softened during the welding operation and thus serve to connect the lock mounting 11 to the front and rear sheets 1 and 3 of the door.
As is shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, legs 17 of lock mounting II are provided with pairs of notches 21a, 21b and 21c in one edge of the legs, the other edges 23 being free from notches.
The reinforcing member 12 of FIG. 3 is generally L-shaped and includes a body 27 having a latch bolt-receiving hole 29 therethrough and projections 31 extending outwardly at opposite ed es thereof to seat in any one of the several pairs of notches a, 21b and 210 of lock mounting II. The reinforcement 12 also includes flanges 33 which extend at substantially right angles to the body 27 and are spaced apart to provide a space 35 for latch bolt actuating unit 8. Notches 34 in body 27 of member 12 are provided to act as bend reliefs when the flanges 33 are bent at substantially right angles to body 27. The body 27 has side edges 37 and the flanges 33 have side edges 39. The edge 37 of body 27 and 39 of flanges 33 will bear against the inner surfaces of legs 17 when member I2 is positioned in lock mounting 11.
It will be understood that the reinforcing member 12 will be positioned with projections 31 in the pair of notches in lock mounting 11 which will accord with the backset dimensions of the particular lock which is to be mounted in the door. For example, when the projections 31 are in the pairs of notches 210 or 21b or 210, locks having backsets of 2% inches, 3% inches and 5 inches, respectively, can be assembled in the mounting and reinforcement. A
When the reinforcing member 12 is in position in the lock mounting 11 with the projections 31 in the pair of notches appropriate for the lock to be assembled therewith, and the mounting is secured in the position in the door indicated in FIGS. 1 and 2, the notched edges of the legs of the mounting will bear against door sheet 1 while the other edges 23 of the legs of the mounting will bear against the inner surface of the other door sheet 3. At the same time, the outer side surfaces of flanges 33 of the reinforcing member 12 will bear against the inner surface of door sheet 3. The flanges 33 are secured to door sheet 3, preferably be welding, as indicated at 41.
When the mounting member 11 is secured to the door sheets, as be welding, and the reinforcement 12 is secured to one of those sheets, as by welding, the assembly of the sheets, the mounting member and the reinforcement will constitute a rigid structure in which a lock bolt can be mounted against excessive movement in any direction.
Having thus described this invention in such full, clear, concise and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, and having set forth the best mode contemplated of carrying out this invention, we state that the subject matter which we regard as being our invention is particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed in what is claimed, it being understood that equivalents or modifications of, or substitutions for, parts of the above specifically described embodiment of the invention may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in what is claimed.
1. A hollow sheet metal door comprising front and rear sheets having opposed flanges along at least one edge of the door and connected together by welding, said flanges being cut away to form a space for a lock mounting, a generally U- shaped lock mounting member between said sheets and projecting into said space, said member having a body and opposed legs extending therefrom, said body having a latch boltreceiving hole and said legs having pairs of notches in opposed edges thereof, said member having projection welding projections engaging with the inner surfaces of said sheets, a generally L-shaped reinforcing member comprising a body and flanges extending from one edge of said body, said body having a latch bolt-receiving hole and having edges to engage the inner surfaces of said legs of the mounting member and projections to seat selectively in an opposed pair of said notches on said .legs, the latch bolt-receiving holes in the mounting member and in the reinforcing member being alignable and the flanges of the L-shaped member being spaced apart to provide a space for a latch bolt actuating unit.
