,To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, FREDERICK J. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wallingford, Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spool- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spool-holders to be worn upon a button or portion of the clothing of seamstresses while sewing, the same consisting substantially in such features of construction and arrangement as will hereinafter be more particularly described and claimed.

In this class of inventions the primary ob ject is to enable a spool of thread to be worn at a convenient place on the clothing of the seamstress while sewing, by which to save time when the thread is needed and avoid loss or misplacement of the spool, as frequently otherwise occurs.

'The object of my invention is to produce a contrivance of this character by which may be had a ready attachment to and detachment from a button or portion of the clothing of the user by the simple act of closing together the parts of which it is constituted, and also to simplify and chcapen the cost of manufacturethercof, as will more fully appearhereinafter.

Referring to the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of a spool-holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge or side View thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of one portion to show more clearly the manner in which the parts are formed; and Fig. 4 is aview of a modification.

In carrying my invention into effect I take two pieces of wire, A A, and at a short distance from, one end bend or coil them a single time, as ata, by which to form a loop or eye, b. I then bend the longer extremity thereof outward and downward, as at c d, and thence back or inward at a right angle, as at c, leaving a free end or portion for entering the opening through the spool, and the upper or shorter extremity is also bent at a right angle oppositely to c, as seen at f, After thus bending or forming the `wires A A, I place the loop Z1 of one over the like loop of the other, with the bends f opposite to each V other, and insert through the loops a securing pin or stud, g, which provides a bearing or fulcrum on which the wires are free to'be operated in the attachment of the device to and its detachment from the button around the shank of which itis placed, and also bringing the lower extremities, c, opposite each other for entering the two ends of the spool. It will be s'een that by this manner of form ing the holder the upper extremities of the wires are made to cross each other, as seen at h, thus forming an opening, t', for lthe entrance and guidance of the thread from the spool. vIt will also be seen that in 'forming the coil a thc'npper bends, f, of the wires will be brought in different planes, thus permitting them to pass each other in closing around the shank of the button, and thereby insuring a perfect fastening without liability of tearing off the button.

If desired, the ends f may be pointed, and thus could they be made to enter a portion of or a fold in the garment and be secured. I prefer, however, that they shall not be pointed. Instead of forming the loop b of a coil in thc wire, it may be formed by simply crimping the wire, as seen at a', Fig. 4, and then slightly turning the loop to one side in order to bring the ends f in different planes, as in the manner of Eig. 1.

The spool is inserted by drawing the two lower extremities apart and then bringing them together with the portions e entering the opposite ends of the spool., 'The upper extremities are placed around the button by simply pulling them apart and then drawing them together around the shank thereofh It is evident that instead of forming my spool-holder of wire I may form the parts of flat metal, employing suitable dies for stamping them out.
