' N. SOLOER.
OAR COUPLING. No. 363,303. Pat anted May 17, 1887.
WITNESSES INVENT R W m4. WW 4, M
ATTORN EYS NEWTON SOLOER, OF BROOKVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AUTOMATIC OAR COUPLING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,303, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed November 27, 1886. Serial No. 220,040. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, N EWTON SOLOER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brookville, in the county ofOgle and State ofIllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a top view. Fig. 2 is a detail and a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a front view. Fig. 4 is a detail and a side view. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section.
My invention relates to car-couplings; and
it consists in the construction andnovel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
- Referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, A designates the draw-head, which is provided with two link-seats B and 0, one on each side of the center seat, D. A buffer disk, E, is located in the center seat, D, the buffer-rod E extending back through a longitudinal seat or bore inthe draw-bar to the slot F, in which is located the spiral spring G,which encircles the buffer-rod E and projects the buffer-rod and buffer-disk normally forward, and also permits them to yield when two draw-heads come together.
The link-seats B and O are each provided with aligned pin-holes, in which the couplingpins H I are seated when in place, and en gage and hold the links K L after the coupling by links has been effected.
On its upper face, and in rear of the linkseats B and O, the draw-head is provided with vertically-projecting bearinglngs M N, be tween which a coupling-bar, P, provided with an arrow-head, is secured upon a transverse shaft, Q. journaled in the bearing-lugs M N. 5 The coupling-bar P has a rectangular seat, It, made transversely through it near its rear end, and in this seat a rectangular (in orosssection) portion, S, of the transverse shaft Q is secured. At one end the transverse shaft Qis provided with a hand-lever, T, which is designed to be operated at the side of the car to raise the coupling-bar I. At its other end the transverse shaft Q is provided with an upwardly-extending curved lever, T, which is connected by a 5 chain, V, to the top of the car, so that the couplingbar may be operated from the top of the car to uncouple it. The coupling-bar P operates automatically to couple with a similar bar i on the next car, while the link-seat may be used with the ordinary links and coupling-pins to couple to similar draw-heads or to the ordinary drawhead using the common link and coupling-pin.
Having described this invention, what I 6 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s.
The combination, with a draw-head] provided with the side link-seats provided with coupling-pins, and the center seat having the buffer- 7c disk, the buffer-rod, and its encirclingspring, of the pivoted coupling-bar having the arrowhead, the transverse shaft, and the levers at each shaft, and the levers at each end of the latter, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
