Description

(No Model.)
J. H. LAWRENCE.
DOOR HANGER. No. 363,148. Patented May 17, `1887.
ll'NiTED STATES JOHN H. LAWRENCE, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.. 363,148, dated May 1'7, 1887.
Application tiled March 30, 1886. Serial No. 197,212. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN II. LAWRENoE,a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsV in Door-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or Iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to that class of barn-door hangers in which the door is supported and carried on two horizontal bars, which are attached to the upper portion and rest, respectively, on the ends of the axle of a carrying-wheel, the latter havingr its tread on a suitable track attached to the barn 5 and my invention pertains, especially, to a novel construction of that part of the hanger which includes the horizontal bars aforesaid andis attached to the door.
The advantages of my construction are ils simplicity and the fact that in the peculiar form shown in my invention all of the parts may be formed of straight steel bars, and thus rendered strong, light, and durable.
As the carrying-roller and the portion at tached to the building are of the usual and well-known form, and nothing isherein claimed in reference thereto, I do not deem it necessary to particularly show or describe such parts.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of that portion of the hanger embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the top of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail of the two parts employed in the construction of my invention.
A is a steel bar, originally straight, but bent laterally by means of dies to form three sides of substantially a square, consisting of the horizontal part b and vertical portionsg g. The part b rests upon one end of the axle of the carrying-roller, the angles a a, formed by the junction or relation of the part b with the parts g g, serving, respectively, as stops for such roller.
B is a steel bar, also originally straight, having its ends bentlaterally by means of dies, so as to form loops G at each end, such loops extending far enough beyond the part Z) of the bar A when A and B are put together, as shown, to permit the axle of the carrying roller D to traverse the entire under surface of the part b without the tread of such roller coming in contact with the loop C. rlhe bar B has also, by means of dies, its central portion thrown slightly upward for a distance cor-` responding to the length of the part I) of bar A, whereby stops or angles d d are formedon the lower side of the bar B, corresponding in relative distance to the angles or stops a a of the bar A. When the bars A and B are thus shaped, they are fastened together by bringing the open ends of the loops C respectively against the side of the bar A at the angles in the latter and passing a rivet, e, vtransversely through both bars. suitably bolted to the door.
The roller D (having its tread in the usual way astride a ledge on the building) is placed between the horizontal portion ot' the bar A and the bar B, the part Z1 ofthe bar A resting on one end of the axle of such roller, and the lower edge of the raised portion of the bar B resting on and forming a track for the other cud of such axle.
It will be seen that the device is very simple and easily constructed, and, being made from steel bars, is extremely strong and durable.
rlhe utility of my invention over similar prior devices consists in the fact that it is con structed of but two parts, whereby ease and cheap ness of construction are attai ucd the number of points of interattaehment reduced, and, as a consequence, the liability of separation of parts lessened. Again, there being no vertical loops, rollers ot' any diameter can be used, and with the ordinary roller less room is required above the door; but the. main advantage is that, the loop C being formed ou the horizontal part .B and the extreme ends of the loops being attached to the plate A, such loops are rigidly held at each end thereof, while in former constructions the open ends of the loops had no support other than a mutual connection laterally, which in no degree prei vented them from opening in the line of their bow. In my invention there are no unsupported ends.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to The ends or sides g g are' secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. In a door-hanger, the combination of the bar A, bent to form a horizontal central part, b, and endsgg at an angle with part b, and the bar B, having recesses d d in its lower edge and its ends bent laterally to formloops G, the ends of such loops being respectively rigidly fastened to the bar A at or near the angles of the latter, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.,
2. In a door-hanger, the combination of the bar A, having the central horizontal portion, I), and vertical supporting ends g g, the bar B, provided with laterally-bent ends C, and placed parallel with the portion b of bar A and its ends attached to bar A at the angles a of the latter, and the roller D, supported on a track, and its axis adapted to roll under and support the portion b and an equal length of the bar B, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
3. Adoor-hanger consisting of hanger-Ways formed of a bar or bars arranged with the longer axis in vertical plane, with lateral bends at the ends of the Ways, iu combination with the vertical supports attached thereto, and a Wheel having an axis running upon the Ways, said Wheel being adapted to run upon the track, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of Vtwo witnesses.
JOHN H. LAWRENCE.
