WITNEssEs: INVBNTOR.:
Wdi@ JW BY Mu/mf ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT HENRY E. KEIL, oF NEw YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 363,145, dated May 1'7, 1887.
Application filed March 8, 1857. Serial No. $230,121. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY F. KETL, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved DoorFastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description. Y
My invention relates to an improved doorfastener specially adapted for use with refrigerator and ice-house doors, and has for its object to provide a device whereby a door will, under all conditions, be brought up tight to thcjamb, and wherein the construction will be simple and cheap and thc device readily and quickly operated.
The invention consists in a cam-faced block attached to a spindle passing through the door, adapted toengage a plate secured to the jamb, having a double-inclined surface.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a partial elevation of the outside of a door having the device attached, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the device on line x x of Fig. 1. Fig. Sis a partial elevation of theinnerside ofthe door andjanib with the device attached, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through said doorandj amb above the attached device.
In carrying out the object of the invention an opening or aperture is made in the door a convenient distance from the outer edge and upon the outside of the door, surrounding said opening, aplate, A, is suitably attached, which plate is provided with lugs a a at rightangles to each other, integral with the outer lower and inner end thereof, the lug a being horizontally situated above the lower edge and the lug c occupying a vertical position forward the inner edge, as shown in Fig. l. Upon the inner side of the door, and surrounding the aforesaid opening therein, a plate, B, provided with an inwardly-projecting collar, is secured, said plate having a plain [lat surface adapted to extend a distance from the opening toward the inner edge of the door, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, and positive lines, Fig. 2.
A square spindle, C, having a thread cut at one end and a handle, C', integral with the other, is passed through the opening in the door until the shoulder c, formed by the enlarged under side oi' the handle, is substantially in contact with the plate A. The aperture in the plate A is made larger than the opening in the door, to receive a collar, c', nearly of equal diameter with said plate-aperture formed upon the spindle C, intervening said plate and handle, which collar, when the spindle is passed through the opening in the door, bears slightly against the surrounding surface, as shown in Fig. 2. The handle Cis provided with a lug, d, at its lower end, inte gral therewith, adapted to engage the lugs a c upon the plate A under circumstances hereinafter set forth. A segmental block, D, is now constructed, having opposite cain-1`aces, d. which block is preferably made with a deep recess, clin its enlarged end, to reduce the weight thereof, and the said ca1n-faced block is provided with a circular projection, E, ccntrally its straight edge, having a square open ing from end to end adapted to receive the spindle C.
The canrhlock D is slid over the spindleY upon the inner side of the` door, the circular projection E forming a washer spacing the cam from the plate B, and a lock-nut, c, is screwed upon the end of the spindle, whereby the cam is held in rigid contact with said spindle, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4.
Upon the inner facing ofthe janilb a plate, F, is secured, having a narrow right-angular projection, F', the outer face of which projection is inclined in opposite directions from the center, the plate being so secured to the jam as that one incline surface of the plate F will cngage one face at the reduced end of the block D when said block is carried from a vertical to a horizontal position, as illustrated in Fig. 4..
The block D is made with a double face and the plate F with a double-inclined surface, so that the device may be used either right or left, as found most convenient.
In operation, when the door is open, the lug d upon the handle rests upon the lug a of the face-plate A, the handle and block being in a horizontal position facing the inner edge of the door. XVhen the handle and consequently the block are carried to a vertical. position, the door may he closed, and when so closed, if
y released.
the handle be carried downward in the direction of the outer edge of the door, the reduced end ofthe cam engages the incline face of plate F, and the farther the handle is carried down the tighter the dooris pressed against the j amb. The fastening is secure when made, and easily Ordinarily the handle need only be carried to a horizontal position to effect a tightjoint; but a full quarter-turn farther may be made in the event the door is badly shrunk or Warped.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastening for doors, consisting ofa spindle passing through the door, having ahandle secured at one end and a double camfaeed block at the other, said block adapted to engage a double-inclined faced plate attached to the door-jarnb, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a square spindle, C, having a handle, C', provided with a lug, d, integral with one end, and a double calnfaced block, D, secured at the other end by a lock-nut, e, an inner plate, Rand an outer plate, A, having lugs'a a', of a plate, F, having a projection, F', the face of which is inclined in opposite directions from the center, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
HENRY F. KErL.
