To @ZZ whom it may concerne Be it known that I JOsErH BULL LITTLE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, resid ing at Vinnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion `of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicators or Gages for Steam-Boilers; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to indicators or gages for steam-boilers, and more particularly to that class in which valves are normally held in an open position and adapted to be closed should the glass sight-tube be broken.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for supporting the valves from their seats and lowering them should said glass sight-tube be broken.
A further object of the invention is to improve the construction of devices of this character and to make their operation simple and thoroughly effective.
The invention consists in thc combination, with a glass si ght-tube and its mountings, said mountings having valve seats, of valves to close said seats and a rod composed of a series loi" sections connected bylinks having each a laterally-extending arm or arms.
The invention further consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter full y described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of a glass sight-tube and its mountings, illustrating the valves and my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the `jointed rod detached, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one ofthe valves.

Referring to the drawings, A A represent the mountings for receiving the upper and lower ends of the glass gage-tube B, said mountings being provided with water-tight joints a.
O C represent, respectively, the inlet and outlet tubes, which are each preferably provided wit-h a stop-cock. (Not shown.)
D represents valveseats, which are formed in the mountings A A, and which are adapted to be closed, when the sight-tube is broken, by valves E E, which valves are normally held from contact with the seats, thus allowing a free circulation through the sighttube. In the inner ends of the valvesEEareformed openings or seats g, which are adapted to receive the ends ofa rod, F, for supporting the valves from contact with the valve seats. This rod or support consists of a series of sections, c, of any desired or suitable number, and connected by links G, having bifurcated ends, in which the sections are pivoted.
H represents arms which project laterally from each side 0il the link, and are adapted to bear against the interior face of the sight-tube. Thesearms may be formed integral with the links, or they may consist each of a single piece of metal extending through openings in the links, as in the present instance.`
It will be observed that should the glass sight-tube become broken the jointed rod will in its efforts to collapse lower the upper valve to its seat and raise the lower valve up against its seat. The lower valve, E', has a supplemental valve, H, to engage a seat, l, in the lower end of the mounting A,which seat communicates with a passage, 71 leading to the exterior of the device. When the glass tube is intact this supplement-al valve will be held to its seat and the passage IL closed; but when the sight-tube is broken the supplemental valve is raised from its seat I, and communication between the boiler and the passage h thus established, so that the valve E is simultaneously raised up against its seat D and closed.
The device above described is simple in its construction, effective in its operation, and at the same time cheap to manufacture and strong and durable.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claiml. rThe combination, with a glass tube and its mountings, said mountings having valveseats, of valves to close said seats and a rod for supporting said valves from their seats, said rod consisting of a series of sections connected by links, each having a laterally-ex tending arm or arms,substantially as described.
