dige Srlgrhule tefrmh tu in lgese Enters ntent mit milking pnt nt tige same TO ALL WHOM I 'I MAY CON CERN Be it known that I, JOHN ASHCROFT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combination of Low-Water DetectorI and High-Pressure Steam-Alarm for Steam-Boilers; and do hereby declare that the followingvis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accomp'af4 flying drawings, making part of this specification, of which- Figure lis a side elevation, and
Figure 2 avertical section.
This invention relates to a novel device for giving'an alarm when'the water in a steam-boiler is below the proper level, as Well as for giving an alarm when the steam iu` said boiler is above the desired pressure, and consists oi' two'separate and distinct' tubes placed at some distance apart, said tubes extending down into the boiler and above the same, the one designed for a. low-water detector, having perforationsfor the admission of steam within the boiler, and a fusibleplug in said tube above the boiler. The other tub/e, designed. for highpressure steam-alarm, also extends down into the boiler and-above the same, and h'as steam-inlet openings within the boiler.- The part of said tube which extends upward outside the boiler contains'an Aadjustable weighted valve and a steam-whistle, both tubes being united within and above the boiler, one'steam-whistle being used for both.
In the drawings-- A denotes a portion of va steam-boiler to which myrinvention is attached.
B is the low-water indicator, having perforationsC C for admission of steam when the water exposes the perforations by descending below the proper level.V y
D is the fusible plug in said tube, and Y E e the steam-escapes.
F is the high-pressure steam-alarm tube, having steam-inlets G G within the boiler, while outside the boilerthe said tube contains an adjustable weighted valve, H, and steam-whistle, I, enclosed in a case, K.
Between the loww ater alarm-tube B and the high steam-pressure tube F are `connections, L M N, the latter being a steam-connection, and having a valve, O, for admitting steam to 'the whistle when said plug is dissolved by the steam, (sec iig. 2.) v l A The operation of my invention is as follows:
As the water in the boiler descends below the pcrforations C'G in the low-water tube B, the steam enters said perforations, and vwill dissolve tho fusible plug D, escaping through the open end E of the pipe B, and through the connection e N, lifting the-valve O from its seat, an/d reaching'the whistle, will give the alarm for low water in the boiler, while the high' steam will enter the tube F, raise the weighted valve H, and reaching the steam-whistle I, will give the alarm for steam of `undue pressure. I Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-, v l. 'lhc construction, arrangement, and combination of the low-water detector-tube B and fusible plug D, with the steam-alarm tube F, weighted valve H, and steam-whistle Lsubstantially as shown and described.
2.- I also claim thesteam-connection pipe N and valve O, in combination with the fusible plug D and steamwhistle I, substantially `as herein shown, described, and set forth.
In testimony whereof, Iihave hereunto'set my signature, this 29th day of June, 1868.
JOHN ASHGROFT.
