B. S. MEAD.
CORNER PLATE FOR VEHICLE BODIES.
N0. 362,985 v Patented May 1'7, 1887 EGBERT S. MEAD, OF VINONA, MINNESOTA,
CORNER PLATE F'QR VEHICLE=BODIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 362,985, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed September 15, 1886. Serial No. $313,619. (Nomodeh) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Eonnn'r S. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vinona, in the county of \Vinona and State of Minnesota, haveinvented certain new and use fnl improvements in Round OornenPlates for VehiclcBodies; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ofreference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view, showing the parts dctached. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 4 is adetail vertical section.
My invention relates to corner-irons adapted to be applied to roundcorner wagonbodies, either plain or paneled; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a metal plate,- which forms the outside ofthe body-corner, said plate being provided with the foot-flanges B B, which extend under and over the sills O of the wagon-body and are secured to said sills by rivets or bolts. The inner corners of the sills G are cut away or beveled, as at Y, thereby leaving the ends of the sills plain and avoiding the necessity of fitting the corner-iron to a curve.
D is a flange at the top of the corner iron or plate A, said flange D being provided at each end with oifscts or depressions X, which re ceive the ends of the end-gate spring or catch E, to hold the end-gate in the closed position.
E represents a flat springcatch running parallel and on top edge of the end-gate, extend ing over onto and resting in depression X. Said spring has a thuinb-catch turned at right angles and hooks over against inside lining, It.
K designates a sheet-metal lining, which extends beyond the flange D and serves as a riveting-surface, and serves also as an inside finish for the corner of the wagon-body and a stop for the end-gate to close against.
The ends of the side panels of the wagonbody are cut away in their upper edges to fit under the offsets or flange D. The upper edges of the sides of the body at the front and rear ends of said sides are provided with top straps, G, of metal, which extend into depressions X,
and are secured by screws passing throughtop iron, G, and corner-iron A.
I is a snaploop, the long arm of which passes down the inner face of the endgate and is riveted thereto, the shorter arm of said loop I extending down the outside of the body far enough to receive a single rivet or bolt by which to secure it.
J J are blocks which are used to fill the space between the corner-plate A and the lining K, the blocks being secured in place by the rivets that secure the corner-plate and lining in place.
By having the lower footflange, B, of size similar to the upper flange, B, it will be seen that when the rails G are placed between the two flanges the rivets or bolts connecting or securing the said rails may have a direct eir gagcment with metal only, and not with metal and wood, as heretofore used.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with the corner-plate A, having the horizontal footflange B, and the upper flange, D, having its ends recessed, as shown, of-thc upper foot-plate, B, having perforations,thebody-sills cutangularly, as shown, and placed between the foot-flanges and secured therein by rivets, the inner corner-plate, K, having perforations to coincide with those of the outer plate, the block interposed between the plate A and lining-plate K, and the end-gate having the catch and loop, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EGBERT S. MEAD.
