FIRE-ESCAPE LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,959, dated May 17, 1887.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE SAMUEL IIANES and ALEXANDER SHAVER, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Iroquois, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escape Ladders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to fire-escape ladders designed to be suspended from a window; and
the object of the invention is to so construct the ladder that it will beheld from the building, so that convenient hand-holds will be provided.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for hanging or suspending the ladder.
XVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fire-escape ladder embodying our i nvention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view.
0 Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the sections of the ladder removed; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the chains for suspending the ladder.
Corresponding parts in the several figures 5 are denoted by the same letters of reference. v Referring to the drawings, A represents the ladder, which consists of a series of sections, 13 B. These sections are each constructed of a single piece of metal bent to form the sides and closed upper end, while their lower ends, a, are bent inwardly and downwardly to form arms 0, which are adapted to bear against the wall of a building, to hold the ladder there from. At the junction of the arms 0 with the sides of the ladder are formed eyes 0, which receive the closed upper end of the adjacent section.
The upper section, B, of the ladder is the same in construction as the other sections, with the exception that it is bent at its upper end at each corner to form a loop, d, to which are attached links 0.
Secured to the links 6 are chains f, having rings g at their upper ends, which rings are adapted to engage hooks .or their equivalents for securing the ladder in place. Upon the chainsf are arranged a series of buttons, 71., which bear on the window-sill and hold the chains therefrom, so that they may be readily grasped in descending the ladder. The lower section of the ladder has its sides connected by a transverse rod or bar, 1', which serves to brace and hold the sides of said section in place.
In Fig. 5 is shown the upper section of a ladder. In this case the said upper section is provided with hooks adapted to engage the roof of a building. When thesehooks are employed, the chains before described are dispensed with.
A ladder constructed as thus described is simple, cheap, and durable, effective in its operation, and may be folded to occupy a minimum amount of room.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a ladder, the upper section, B, composed of a single piece of metal having the sides and closed upper end, saidpiece of metal 8c being bent at the lower ends of the sides to form inward]y-extending sides, and at the upper end of the section to form the loops in the corners of the section, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a sectional ladder, 8 of chains secured to the upper end thereof, and buttons on said chains, as set forth.
In testimony, whereof we ailiix our signa tu res in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE SAMUEL HANES. ALEXANDER SHAVER.
