Claims (6)
1. An apparatus for forming a casting comprising: at least two mold members cooperating together to form a mold cavity in a closed position; means to effect relative movement between said mold members between opened and closed positions; a third mold member a. coextensive with selected one of said two mold members, b. adapted for movement between coextending spaced and contiguous relationship with a portion of said one member, and c. containing sprue channel portions in communicating relationship with said mold cavity; means for effecting relative movement to said third mold member between said spaced and contiguous positions relative to said one member; means to introduce liquid phase metal through said sprue channel portions into said cavities; and means to move said third mold member in sliding and contiguous relationship parallel with said one member for sheering solidified sprue portions.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 including a fixed layer of resilient high-temperature plastic on the forming walls defining said mold cavity.
3. forming a casting comprising: at least two mold members cooperating together to form a mold cavity in a closed position; means to effect relative movement to said mold members between opened and closed positions; a third mold member a. coextensive with a portion of a selected one of two mold members, b. adapted for movement between coextending spaced and contiguous relationship with a portion of said one member, and c. containing sprue channel portions in a communicating relationship with said mold cavity; a fourth mold member a. coextensive with a portion of said third mold member, b. adapted for movement between coextending spaced and contiguous relationship with a portion of said third mold member; and c. containing second sprue channel portions in register with and forming extensions of said first sprue portions of said third mold member; means to move said third and fourth mold members in sliding relationship relative to each other in said contiguous position, to position said first and second sprue channel portions out of register with each other after chilling of said metal; and means to introduce liquid phase metal through said second and first sprue channel portions into said mold cavity.
4. The apparatus of claim 3 for forming a casting including a fixed layer of resilient high-temperature plastic on the forming walls of and defining said mold cavity.
5. The apparatus of claim 3 including: means for effecting relative movement between said third mold member and said one mold member in sliding and contiguous relationship therebetween to change the relative position of said first sprue channel portions relative to said mold cavity after chilling of said metal to shear chilled sprue portions in said first sprue channel portionS from the metal coextending to said mold cavity.
6. The apparatus of claim 5 for forming a casting including a fixed layer of resilient high-temperature plastic on the forming walls of and defining said mold cavity.
