W. WEBSTER. FIRE DAMPER REGULATOR.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WEBSTER, OF MORRISANIA, NEW YORK.
FIRE-DAMPER REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 36,252, dated August 19, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM WEBSTER, of Morrisania, in the county of IVestchester, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire and Damper Regulators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a vertical section of and Fig. 2 is a top View of my improved regulator.
The nature of my improvement consists in the construction of fire and damper regulators in which a metallic piston moves in a metallic cylinder, a cylindrical piece ofvulcanized india rubber, or other vulcanlzed ation.
I make a cylinder of iron or other suitable metal, say siX inches interior diameter, see drawing A, A, B, B, and to give greater stability I extend the base of the cylinder A, A, in the direction R, and firmly annex the regulator to the steam-boiler or other support by means of screws S, S. The piston C, C, of iron or other suitable metal, is of smaller diameter than the cylinder, leaving a space between it and the cylinder of,
say, one-quarter of an inch all around to be occupied by the cylindrical shaped vulcanized india rubber, D, D, D, D. The bottom of the piston C, C, is provided with a projection or flange E, E, which forms a seat upon which the vulcanized india rubber D D rests. The curved wall of the cylinder A, A, A, A, is provided at a suitable point with an interior projection I, I, which is nearly in contact with the vulcanized india rubber and incloses it between the piston, the cylinder, the flange, E, E, and the projection I, I. The standard or bar K, K, rests upon the piston at its lower endand passes through the top of the cylinder. The lever L, L, which turns upon the fulcrum M rests upon the upper point of the standard K, K, as is represented at N. The lever is made of iron, but the wearing parts of the lever as well as the fulcrum and the standard K had better be of steel. An adjustable weight O, slides upon the lever. The
lever is connected by means of the rod P, with the crank Q, which turns the damper T in the flue or chimney.
I now proceed to describe the operation of the regulator. By means of the pipe U, at the bottom of the cylinder, connection is made with the steam boiler. In order to prevent the access of steam from the boiler to the vulcanized india rubber, I make a depressed bend in a horizontal part of the pipe U, or an equivalent U) shaped bend in a vertical pipe, the effect of which bend as is well known and as is commonly used in other apparatuses, is to cause a deposit of water in the pipe at the bend and thus pre vent the contact of steam with the vulcani-zed india rubber which would be injurious, or to effect the same purpose I connect the pipe U, with the boiler at a point below the level of the water in the boiler. It is evident that, when the weight 0 is adjusted upon the lever to balance any desired pressure of steam in the boiler, the piston C, C, will rise when the pressure of the steam in the'boiler exceeds the desired pressure until it is stopped by the resistance of the vulcanized india rubber, or by the set screw V. A very slight motion of the piston C, 0, communicated to the lever L, by the standard K, suffices to turn the crank Q and damper T, so as to diminish the sectional area of the flue or chimney, and thus check the but not completely fill by its thickness thespace between the piston and the cylinder.
I do not claim the regulating of fires and dampers by means of a piston moving in a cylinder, acted upon by the pressure of the steam in the boiler, such apparatus having been used before. Nor do I claim the use of vulcanized india rubber as steam packing of pistons, it having been used for such purpose before.
What I claim as new and my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination and arrangement of the cylinder A, A, B, B, the piston C, C, and packing D, D, D, D, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM WEBSTER.
