' L. BRADLEY;
HAND FIRE EXTINGUIS'HER.
Patented May 10, 1887.

- UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUCIEN BRADLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAND FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,485, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed May 28, 1886. Serial No. 203,526. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUoIEN BRADLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to hand fire-extinguishers; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my device as put up for use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of inder is flattened upon one side, as at a, and
formed with a long and narrow dischargeopening, (6*, through which the contents may be thrown in a thin sheet, and thereby be distributed to better advantage. This opening is ordinarily covered by a sheet of metal, I), secured by soft solder and provided with a wire loop, I), by which the whole is hung to the wall or other convenient point. Within this end of the cylinder is a partition or deflector, '0, extending across it diagonally to the discharge-opening, as in Fig. 4, so that all the liquid is directed to the proper point and discharged freely without rebounding against the end of the case. In the form herein shown "the case is extended beyond this diagonal or inclined deflector, simply for giving the article a better and more symmetrical appearance;
when required.
but it will be evident that this is of no practical use, and the deflecting-plate may be the side wall of the case drawn in, as shown, if desired.
This extinguisher I usually construct of tin or other sheet metal, and fill it with any suitable extinguishing liquid, many of which are Well known and need not be more particularly explained herein. The tube is then hung upon the wall or in any convenient locality, and when wanted for use it is grasped by the hand and jerked from its fastening, which tears off the loop and its attached strip of metal, thus exposing the discharge-opening, and the fluid is then thrown upon the fire through this opening, the peculiar shape of which causes it to be discharged in a thin sheet, and thus used to the best advantage. The coveringpiece I), being secured by soft solder, is quite tight and will not leak, but is readily torn oft I prefer to secure or hang the device upon a staple rather than upon a nail, as this renders it impossible to remove it without pulling off this strip.
The acids contained in the liquid will in time injure the metal case, and I therefore coat or line this upon the inside with some suitable non-corrosive material-suel1 as enamel-Which protects the metal, no matter how long it may stand before use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described hand fire-extinguisher, consisting of a tubular metal case lined with non-corrosive material and having its side near one end flattened and formed with a narrowtransverse discharge-opening, and a covering-strip soldered over said openingandprovided with a loop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUOIEN BRADLEY.
