Abstract

A lipstick or like holder is largely of the conventional kind having two relatively rotatable coaxial sleeves. The inner sleeve has an external operating knob and the outer sleeve is fitted by force into a metallic reinforcing and/or decorative tube. A godet for supporting the stick is slidable axially in the inner sleeve and has a lug extending through a slot in the inner sleeve and engaging a slot in the outer sleeve, one slot being longitudinal and the other helicoidal. In order to prevent unwanted relative rotation of the sleeves and the consequent risk of the stick engaging the cover the invention provides an extension on the metallic tube beyond that end of the outer sleeve adjacent to the operating knob. There are then two opposed faces, one on the extension and the other on the inner tube. A boss or bosses on one of these faces exerts or exert a braking force on the other face.

MAE
II. TZ/
The present invention relates to holders for housing sticks of pasty material, such as lipsticks, paints, pomades, cosmetics, pharmaceutical or veterinary products and the like, of the type comprising two coaxial sleeves of moulded plastics material which can be turned one relatively to the other, a godet for supporting the stick; and movable axially in the inner sleeve, an external operating knob fast with the inner sleeve, or at least one lug on the godet and extending through a slot in the inner sleeve, and engaging a slot in the outer sleeve, one of said slots being longitudinal and the other helicoidai, a metallic reinforcing tube into which the outer sleeve-is fitted by force, and a removable cover closing the whole. The tube may also have a decorative function.
In holders of this type, it is'desirable to avoid, due to vibrations, the outer sleeve being turned relatively to the inner sleeve and the godet approaching the cover, an occurrence which would risk bringing the end of the stick into contact with the bottom of the cover against which it would be deformed in an unwanted manner.
Different means for avoiding the risk of one of the sleeves turning in an unwanted manner relatively to the other have already been proposed. One ofthese means consists in causing a boss on the inner sleeve to bear against the inner cylindrical surface of a skirt formed by an extension of the outer sleeve. This solution however has certain disadvantages. in face the sleeves of plastics material can, depending on the moulding conditions, have final dimensions with variations on the order of several hundredths of a millimeter, so that the friction of the above-mentioned boss against the skirt of the outer sleeve can be more or less pronounced, depending on the dimensions of the finished components. As a result, in the case where the friction is particularly pronounced if binding occurs between the boss of the inner sleeve and the skirt of the outer sleeve which renders the holder unusable.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a holder of the type in question in which these disadvantages are overcome or are at least reduced.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds. The invention is characterized in that in a holder of the kind referred to above thereis an extension to the metallic tube extending beyond that end of' the outer sleeve adjacent to the operating knob, there are two opposed surfaces, one being afforded by said extension and the other being afforded by the inner sleeve, and boss means comprising at least one boss, on one of said opposed surfaces, which boss means exerts a braking force on the other of said surfaces.
Thanks to this arrangement there is frictional engagement between a component of a plastics material and a metal component so that there is virtually no risk of binding, even if,'due to relatively pronounced variations in the dimensions of the plastic sleeve, the boss means exerts a substantial pressure.
In one embodiment, wherethe above-mentioned end of the outer sleeve is located axially against an annular shoulder of the inner sleeve the boss means is at right angles to said shoulder.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of nonlimitive examples, two embodiments of holders for a stick of pasty material in accordance with the invention.
In these drawings:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section along line i-ll of FIG. 2, through a first embodiment;
FIG. 2 is a transverse section along line ll-ll of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a transverse section through a modification.
The holder for a stick of pasty material such as a lipstick paint, pomade, cosmetic, pharmaceutical or veterinary material or the like, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, comprises in a standard manner a godet l for carrying the I stick of pasty material and mounted for longitudinal sliding movement in an inner sleeve of plastics material 2 provided with a cylindrical operating knob 4. To this end, the godet I has, projecting from its cylindrical outer surface, two diametrically opposed lugs,
.866}! s 3 I Hem glide in mm i di al slots, such as 5.
' formed in the cylindrical wall of the inner sleeve 2.
' plastics material and retained On this inner sleeve 2, can turn an outer sleeve 7 also of axially by two shoulders 11 and 12 on the inner sleeve. in the inner face of the cylindrical wall of the outer sleeve 7 are formed two diametrically opposed helicoidal slots l3, 14 in which are engaged the ends of the lugs3oftheslidinggodet I.
On the outer sleeve 7 is fitted, by force, a metallic reinforcing tube 18 one end of which has a base 19 largely pierced, as indicated by 21, for the passage of the stick of pasty material. Finally, the whole is' covered by a standard cap which, for clarity of illustration has not been'shown.
In order that, due to the efifect of vibrations, the two sleeves 2 and 7 should not risk turning one relatively to the other while the holder is closed, and the end of the stick of pasty material should not risk coming into contact with the bottom of the cover, there is provided a braking system which comprises, on the cylindrical surface of the annular shoulder 12 of the inner sleeve, at least one boss, such as 23, which bears frictionally with a certain pressure against the smooth inner cylindrical surface of an extension of the outer metallic tube 18 beyond that end of the outer sleeve 7'which is adjacent to the operating knob 4, as shown. In this example there are provided three uniformly spaced bosses' 23 on the periphery of the shoulder 12. Of course the number of these bosses can be less than three or on' the contrary greater. Because the breaking bosses 23 are moulded with the inner sleeve 2 of plastics material there is no risk of their binding against the inner surface of the metallic tube 18, which ensures the smooth and reliable ftmctioning of the holder. 7
FIG. 3 shows, in cross section similar to that of FIG. 2 a
modification which only differs from the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2 in that the bosses 25 are formed by indentations of the extension of the tube 18 instead of projections from the inner sleeve; they bear frictionally against the smooth continuous cylindrical surface of the shoulder 12 of the inner sleeve.
The invention of course is not limited to the embodiments described and illustrated which have been given by way of example. Modifications can be introduced without departing from the scope of the invention.
Thus, for. example, the braking bosses instead of being disposed on the cylindrical surface of the shoulder 12 of the inner sleeve can be provided on another part of the inner sleeve and, for example, on the part of the'latter which forms the operating knob 4. Further, the projecting bosses on the cylindrical inner surface of the extension of the metal tube can alternatively be otherwise formed, and may for example be constituted by undulations in the extension.
I claim:
1. A holder for a stick of pasty material, comprising'an inner cylindrical sleeve of plastic material which is concentrically and rotatably mounted in an outer cylindrical sleeve of plastic material, said inner sleeve having an integral operating knob protruding from the bottom and of said outer sleeve, and a cup-shaped stick support axially movable in said inner sleeve and having at least one radially extending lug which engages in a slot defined by each of said sleeves, respectively, one of said slots being longitudinal and the other slot being helical, a metallic reinforcing sleeve being fitted onto said outer sleeve and rendered relatively immovable therewith, said metallic sleeve having an extension protruding downwardly from the bottom end of said outer sleeve, said knob being spaced from said outer sleeve bottom end by an annular shoulder located within saidmetallic sleeve extension, said inner sleeve below said annular shoulder and the extension of said metallic sleeve above said knob protruding an annular space, and at least one radial projection provided integral with either of the inner surface of the metallic sleeve extension or the outer surface of the shoulder extending into said annular space and positioned therebetween, whereby portions of the inner surface of said metallic sleeve extension frictionally engage portions of the outer surface of said annular shoulder to resist relative rotation of said cylindrical plastic sleeves.
