BAKE-OVEN'COVER.

BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,903, dated April 26, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BARTON E. SPERRY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Batavia, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bake-Oven Oovers,which is fully set forthin the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of abakeoven cover embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional View of the same,taken on the line 50 x of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an elevation of the handle detached; Fig. 4, a bottom plan view of the same, and Fig. 5 a view showing the manner of arranging the cover for packing.

My invention relates to bake-oven covers, and has for its object the construction of these covers in such a manner that they may be readily packed in a minimum space for shipment,while at the same time they possess all the advantages of the ordinary form of cover; and to these ends my invention consists in certain novel features, which I will now proceed to describe, and will then particularly point out in the claim.

In the drawings, in which Ihave shown my invention practically carried out in one form, A indicates a cover, which is provided witha body portion or web, a, which is raised in the center, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby forming a central boss, a.

A indicates a peripheral flange, which surrounds the body portion at its edge, being inclined outward, as shown, and being provided with a rabbet or seat, a at its lower edge, as is usual in bake-oven covers of this description. B indicates the handle, which is cast in a separate piece from the body of the cover,and is provided with a V-shaped bottom surface, I), as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 8, and 4 of the drawings. This V-shaped bottom surface fits within a correspondingly-shaped seat, aion the summit of the central boss, 0., of the body A. A bolt, 0, passes through the handle and boss and receives a nut, c, on the under side, by means of which the handleis clamped firmly in position upon the body of the cover.

Heretofore in bake-oven covers of this description it has been customary to cast the handle and body of the cover in a single piece, so that in packing the covers for storage or shipment it is impossible to nest them, owing to the projecting handles, and a large amount of space is thereby taken up.

In my improvement it will readily be seen that when it is desired to pack the covers it is only necessary to remove the handles, when the bodies can be nested, fitting one within the other in the manner shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and thereby taking up a minimum of space, while at the same time the arrangement is extremely compact and will stand rough handling. The parts can readily be assembled at any time, and when in position the handle is prevented from turning,and thereby screwing the nut off the bolt and getting loose, by reason of its V-shaped under surface fitting within the corresponding seat on the body.

Bake-ovens are a form ofhollow-ware largely used in unsettled portions of the country,where stoves or ovens are unavailable, and consist of a cast-metal vessel adapted to be placed directly in the camp-fire for cooking purposes, the cover being for the purpose of preventing the flames and ashes from having access to the interior of the bake-oven. Owing to the fact that these bake-ovens are used only in those portions of the country where the difficulties of transportation render stovesunattainable, it will beseen that it is highly advantageous to so construct the covers that they may be nested,in order to occupya minimum of space,

thus saving transportation expenses, and in many cases rendering transportation feasible where it would otherwise be' impossible.

It-is obvious that various modifications in the details of construction may be made without departing from the principle of my in- Vention, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting myself strictly to the precise details hereinbefore described, and shown in the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
