SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,810, dated April 26, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL B. BURK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Walla Walla and Territory of W'ashing'ton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. This invention relates to doors; and it consists in the improvements more fully hereinafter set forth, claimed, and shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a door embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the operating slide and links.
The improvement consists, mainly, in the means for operating the pivoted valves in the door, and has for itsobject to devise a combined screen and tight door that can be made to ventilate and admit light, with a screen to keep out flies.
The door A is of Ordinary construction. The upper panels are removed and replaced by screens or valves B, which are composed of sheet metal or other material, having the edges bent at right angles and pivoted to swing'horizontally by nails or screws 1), passed through the flanges binto the uprights a on each side of the space occasioned by the removal of the panels. The tops of the valves are rolled to stiffen them, and the inner ends are provided with arms B, to which the operating-rods G are pivotally attached. The lower portion of one valve overlaps the top portion of the valve immediately below it, and the lower corners of the flanges b are cut away, so the valves may fit close and form a tight door when said valves are closed.
The slide D, located intermediate the space between the lower panels, is vertically slotted, and its edges are held by keepers E, fastened to the door. The bottom is curved outward, forming a handle, (2, to be grasped when opcrating the slide to open or close the valves. The top is expanded, forming ears d, which are bent slightly outward to one side of the plane of the slide and are connected with the operating-rods O by links 6, which are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the lower ends of the operating-rods and at their lower ends to the ears. The links are flat bars and are pivotally twisted, as shown, to accommodate them to the planes of the ears of the slide and the ends of the operating-rods.
In practice the two vertical rows or series of valves are simultaneously operated'by moving the slide D up or down. An upward movement closes: the valves and a'downward movement opens them. The movement of the slide is limited by a set-screw, F, passed through the slot d and screwed into the door. A washer is interposed between the head of the screw and the slide, and overlaps the latter on each side of the slot; By this means the slide may be held at any intermediate position between the extreme limits, so as to hold the valves more or less open, according to the desired ventilation and light.
A screen, G, of wire-cloth, is placed over the valves on either side of the door, and is secured thereto by two brackets, one at each corner, and a staple at its lower end. The brack ets are screwed into the, door and enter openings in the screen. The staple is driven into the door through the wirecloth. By this means the valves can be opened to ventilate and air the room and the flies excluded.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the door having vertical spaces, of valves of sheet material having flanged sides closing said spaces and horizontally pivoted and arranged the one above the other, having the bottom of one valve overlapping the top of the next valve beneath it, and having the lower portions of the side flanges cut away, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with the door having vertical spaces, of valves closing said spaces and, horizontally pivoted, arms projecting from the inner edges of the valves, operatingrods connecting the arms, and the slide 0011-' expanded laterally, forming ears which are nected with said operating-rods, whereby the bent outward, and the links uniting the ears two sets of valves can be simultaneously oper- I and rods,substantially as shown and described.
