Description

(ModeL) R. H. DORN.
LOOK HINGE.
Patented Apr. 26, 1887.
UNITED STATESPAT NT OFFICE.
RUFUS H. DORN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
LOCK-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,681, dated April 26, 1887.
(Modch) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUs H. DORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a blind-hinge of simple construction which is adapted, when the blind is opened and thrown back, to be securely held in such position by a locking device which, by virtue of the impetus given to the blind as the latter is thrown back, is positively forced into locking position.
My locking blind hinge consists of two leaves, one of which is to be attached to the window-frame and the other to the blind, one of the said leaves having'a pintle fitting loosely in a socket in the otherin the usual manner. That oneof the said leaves-preferably the socket-leaf-which is to be secured to the window-frame is provided with a lug or projection adapted to be engaged by a weighted lever pivot-ally attached to the other leaf, which latter is to be fastened to and thus movable with the blind. The said lever is provided with a notch adapted to engage the lug on the leaf attached to the window-frame, and the inblind back.
back. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the socket and pintle leaves, respectively.
A denotes a portion of the window-frame, and B one of the leaves of the hinge (in this instance the socket-leaf) secured thereto, said leaf being provided with a holding-lug. b.
O is the pintle-leaf of the hinge attached to the blind D, said leaf having an aperture, 0, through which passes the locking-lever E, having a weighted end, 6, provided with a notch, e, the inner wall of which is on a lug, e projecting downward below the pivotal point of the lever, said point in the present instance being at the upper wall of a notch, e, which is tlared slightly to enable the said lever to be placed in operative position and to vibrate on the pintle-leaf, to which it remains attached when the pintle-leaf is secured to the blind, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawlugs. 1
When the parts are assembled as shown in the drawings, and the blind is thrown back to the position shown in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. l, the rounded lower face of the weighted end of the lever will strike the holding-lug b on the socket-leaf, thus raising said end to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and as the notch 6 comes fully over the said lug the lug e on the lever E will come into forcible contact with the lug b. As the lug e is below the pivotal point of said lever E, the weighted end of the latter will be positively forced downward by the impetus of the contact between the lugs b and 6 thereby bringing the lever to the position indicated by full lines in Fig. 2, with the lug I) fully engaged by the notch e of the lever, and when the parts are in this position the blind will be securely looked back and the Weighted end of the le ver will prevent any accidental disengagement of the latter from its holding-lug b.
The lever E projects through the blind D, so that it is conveniently accessible to be operated to release the blind when the latter is to be closed. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the two leaves of a hinge, one of which is provided with a holding-lug, I), of the locking-lever E, pivotally attached near its center to the other of said and the weighted lever E, movable with the leaves, and having the Weighted end 6, pro- I leaf 0, and having the lug 0" below its pivotal vided with the notch e, and the striking-lug point, and the notches e and 6 the latter be- 15 e at the rear or inner side of said notch, the ing flaring to admit of the vibration of said 5 latter and the said striking-lug being'both belever, substantially as set forth.
low the pivotal point of the said lever, so that In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the latter will be positively forced into en gagepresence of two witnesses. ment with the said holding-lug when the blind is suddenly thrown back, substantially as set RUFUS DORN' r0 forth. WVitnesses:
2. The combination, with the socket-leaf B, JOHN M. DUNNING, having the holding-lug b, of the pintle-leaf O, A. SLOOUM.
