COMBINED WATCH-KEY AND CHAIN-BAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 361,655, dated April 19, 1887.

Application filed November 5, 1885. Serial No.181,921.- (No model To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SHERBURN L. SWASEY, of Newbury, Orange county, Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Watch-Key and Guard-Bar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is "to provide a new and improved watch-key, which is dustproof, and also forms a watch-guard.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forming part of this specificatiomin which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side View of my improved watehkey. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are end views of the same, Fig. 5 showing the key as having but two strips instead of four, as in Figs. 3 and 4.

The metal or other barrel A,which is square or cylindrical on theoutsidefls provided with a square or rectangular bore, and in the same two or more strips, B, of the best steel are placed, and fixed insuch a manner that the ends of the said strips project from both ends of the barrel, as shown, the projecting ends having their outer surfaces rounded like ordlnary watch-keys, so that they can be placed in the winding-holes of the watches. The said strips 13 have their inner sides grooved longitudinally and formed in such a manner that when the said strips are placed together in the barrel a square bore will be formed by them within the barrel and in the projecting ends of the said strips.

The strips may be so constructed that the diameter of the said bore decreases from one end of the barrel to the other, so that the two ends of the key can be used on winding-stems of different sizes; as is shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5.

The barrel may be provided with any suitable number of strips as may be found desirable, two being shown in Fig. 5 and fourin Figs. 3 and 4.

A collar,D,surrounds the barrel at the middle, and to the samethe ring E is attached for hanging the key on or attaching it to a chain,

so that the said key can be used as a watchguard.

The key is dust-proof, as any dust or other matter that has accumulated in the samecan easily be removed by introducing a wire or like object into one end of the key, preferably the smaller end, and pushing the dirt, dust, &c., out at the other end.

Collars H are preferably formed on the ends of the barrel.

I am aware that a tubular bar has had two semi-cylindrical sections of a watchkey projecting from one end; also, that a Watch-key has had different-sized apertures at its opposite ends, and I do not claim the same as of my invention.

Having thus described my invention,l claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- 1. A. combined watch-key and watch-guard comprising the tubular cross-bar A, having the chain-attaching ring E secured between its ends, and the strips B, extending through the bar, projecting beyond both ends thereof, grooved longitudinally on their inner faces, and rounded on their projecting ends,substantiall y as set forth.

2. A watch-key formed of a series of steel strips inserted and fixed in a barrel, the ends of the said strips projecting from the ends of the said barrel, and the said strips having their inner sides grooved or otherwise so shaped that a square bore is formed between the said strips, which bore decreases in diameter from one end of the key to the other, substantially as herein shown and described.
