SETH TVHITE PAINE, OF ROCHESTER, NETV YORK.
CUTTING ATTACHMENT FOR CHECK-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,541, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed November 13, 1886. Serial No. 218,796. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
- Be it known that I, SETH WHITE PAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutting Attachments for Check- Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a detachable and adjustable cutting attachment for check, draft, and receipt books; and it consists of a checkcutter having parallel spring-arms provided at one end with clasps, whereby the cutter can be detachably secured to the back cover of a check, draft, or receipt book, said cutter being formed in two lateral parts, connected by flanged'bars at each end, whereby the detachable cutter can be readily'adj usted to varying widths of different book-covers.
The objects of my invention are to provide a detachable and adjustable check, draft, or receipt cutter having spring-arms adapted to hold the cutter blade or bar in close contact with the book leaves or blanks, as the same are gradually decreased in thickness by use and removal, and also to provide a cutting attachment that can be readily and quickly applied to book-covers of varying width, and be adjusted forward or back, as required, to coincide accurately with the space between a check, draft, or receipt book and the stub.
These objects are accomplished by the con-- struction illustrated in the annexed drawings, in whicl1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a checkbook with my improved cutting attachment applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cutting attachment detached and partly dismembered. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the front cover of a check, draft, or receipt book; 2, the back cover; 3, the check, draft, or receipt blanks, and 4 their stubs.
The cutting attachment in the form of construction shown comprises two parallel springarms, 5, each of which is provided at both ends with an inward-projecting rectangular plate, 6 and 7, said plates and connected springarms being made of any suitably-elastic metal or like material. At one end of each spring arm 5 is anoutward-projecting offset, which is bent under the end of the arm and contiguous plate 6, to form, in conjunction therewith, 5 5 a clasp, 8, for securing the cutting attachment to the back cover of the book. The plates 6 and 7 at the ends of the spring-arms 5 are connected, respectively, by flanged bars 9 and 10, having their long parallel edges bent over to form guides 12, for receiving said plates, and to enable the opposite plates and connected spring-arms to be moved toward and from each other to vary the width of the cutting attachment, according to the size of the 6 5 book to which it is to be applied.
The clasps 8 and plates 6 at the rear or under ends of the spring-arms 5 form, in con nection with the transverse flanged bar 9,-a secure and reliable fastening for the cutting attachment, whereby it can be quickly attached to the back cover of a book without rivets and in such a way that it can be moved along said cover to any desired point. As the check, draft, or receipt blanks are removed from the book the flanged bar l0,whieh forms atransverse cutter or cutter-bar at the forward or upper ends of the spring-arms 5, is held by said arms in firm and close elastic contact with the division-line between the blanks and their stubs.
By means of the clasps 8 overlapping the edges of the book-cover, the entire cutting attachment can be slid longitudinally along the back cover to bring the outer edge of the bar or cutter 10 to the proper point for severing the check, draft, or receipt from its stub.
The connection of the flanged bars 9 and 10 with the plates 6 and 7 is such that the parallel spring-arms 5 and attached clasps 8 can be readily moved toward or from each other, to accommodate the cutting attachment to books of various widths.
This adjustable and detachable cutting attachment is simple, durable, and efficient, and can be applied successively to a large number of books without liability of breakage.
In using this device, it is preferable to press with the fingers onthe bar 10, to hold it in contact with the paper while the check is being detached. It will be observed that the flange 12 at the front of the bar 10 is flush with the bottom of the bar to form a sharp cutting-edge; but this is not essential.
