Definitions
- the present invention relates to a font of type and more particularly to a pattern font of type wherein a single, double or triple thickness letter can be engraved by using the pattern font.
- A'pattern font of type is provided whereby a single, double or triple thickness letter can be engraved by using the pattern font.
- the stylus of a conventional engraving machine may be used to pick off the desired thickness letter or numeral from the pattern font and transmit the same to a remote engraver.
- the engraver will engrave the selected letter or numeral on an object such as a tray, trophy or the like.
- the pattern font of type is provided with a plurality of grooves therein.
- the grooves in the pattern font of type will define a triple thickness letter. Some of the grooves will also define a single thickness letter. Some of the grooves will also define a double thickness letter.
- the single and double thickness letters will be defined by separate and distinct grooves which cooperate together to define the triple thickness letter.
- the single and double thickness grooves will be positioned with respect to each other to define the triple thickness letter.
- FIG. 1 is a plan view of a font of type having letters of single thickness shown in the left, center and right positions;
- FIG. 2 is a plan view of a font of type having letters of double thickness shown in the left, center and right positions;
- FIG. 3 is a plan view of a font of type having letters of triple thickness shown in the left, center and right p sitions;
- FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a conventional engraving machine which can be used with the present invention.
- FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a pattern font of type in accordance with the present invention.
- FIG. 6 is a section view taken along the line 6-6 of FIG. 5;
- FIG. 7 is a plan view of a triple thickness engraving produced by using the pattern font of type of the present invention.
- FIG. 8 is a plan view of a double thickness engraving produced by use of the same pattern font of type to produce the triple thickness engraving of FIG. 7;
- FIG. 9 is a plan view of a single thickness engraving produced by use of the same pattern font of type used to produce the triple thickness engraving of FIG. 7 and the double thickness engraving of FIG. 8.
- FIG. 4 a conventional engraving machine designated generally by the reference numeral 10.
- the engraving machine 10 includes a frame which includes a support member 12 on the left side of FIG. 4 supported by legs 14. Member 12 is coupled to the legs 14 by C-shaped adapters 16. On the opposite side of the frame, there is provided a second support member 18. Member 18 is supported by legs 20 and coupled thereto by C-shaped adapters 22.
- the legs 14 and 20 are interconnected by a hub 32 by means of webs 24, 26, 28 and 30.
- the hub 32 supports a vertical shaft 34 for up and down and rotary movement. Since the engraving machine 10 is conventional, it need not be described herein in detail. If desired, the engraving machine may be of the type disclosed in US. @at. 2,426,156.
- a pattern plate or pattern font of type 36 is removably supported on the member 18 and contains the printed matter to be engraved on an object.
- the pattern plate 36 may be composed of any suitable material such as metal.
- the plate may be approximately of an inch thick. As shown in FIGS. 1-3, this invention is directed primarily to the engraving of letters in either left, center or right positions in either single, double or triple thickness.
- FIG. 1 shows letters in the left, center and right position of single thickness.
- FIG. 2 shows letters in the left, center and right position of double thickness.
- FIG. 3 shows letters in left, center and right position of triple thickness. It is to be appreciated however that this invention is not limited to the engraving of letters and it is also applicable to the engraving of numerals of single, double or triple thickness.
- a stylus 38 is adapted to trace the printed matter on the pattern plate 36.
- Stylus 38 depends from a pantograph 40.
- the operation of the pantograph 40 is well known in the art and need not be described herein.
- An engraving tool 42 is supported by the pantograph and is provided with a lever 46 which permits selective lowering of the engraver 42.
- One end of the pantograph 40 is connected to a carriage 48.
- the carriage 48 is movable by means of a handle 50 to cause the carriage 48 to reciprocate toward and away from the support 18.
- the engraver 42 is adapted to engrave printed matter traced by the stylus 38 onto an object 44.
- the object 44 may be a tray, trophy, medal, etc.
- the pattern plate of font of type 36 is provided with a plurality of grooves 52, 54 and 56.
- the grooves 52, 54 and 56 define a triple thickness letter which may be traced by the stylus 38 to engrave the representation of a triple thickness letter 60 on an object 58 (FIG. 7).
- the grooves 54 and 56 may be followed by the stylus 38 to engrave the representation of a double thickness of the same letter 64 on object 62 (FIG. 8).
- the groove 52 may be followed by the stylus 38 to engrave the representation of a Single thickness of the same letter 68 on an object 66 (FIG. 9).
- the grooves may be approximately ,6 of an inch in depth.
- the groove 52 may be of one color, such as black, whereas the grooves 54 and 56 may be of another color, such as red.
- an operator of the engraving machine 10 will be able to merely follow a color code instruction as to what type of letter is to be engraved on an object, such as object 44.
- the grooves 54 and 56 are positioned with respect to the groove 52 to permit an attractive triple thickness engraving such as indicated by the reference numeral 60.
- a double thickness letter can also be traced by having the stylus follow the grooves 54 and 56.
- a single thickness letter generally indicated by the reference numeral 68 can be traced by having the stylus follow the groove 52.
- the pattern font consists of any desired indicia, such as letters or numerals. There will normally be only one indicium on each pattern font.
- the single pattern font 36 provides great versatility and eliminates the necessity of providing numerous pattern fonts. In the past, it has been necessary to provide distinct pattern fonts to permit engravings 60, 64 and 68 to be made. This invention results in the elimination of the need for substantial storage space for numerous pattern fonts and also results in substantial economies, since a single pattern font rather than three pattern fonts may be purchased.
- the pattern font may contain any desired indicia such as letters or numerals.
- a pattern font of type for use with an engraving machine comprising a pattern font having a plurality of grooves therein, said grooves defining a single thickness representation of indicium and a separate and distinct double thickness representation of said indicium, said single and double thickness indicium grooves being positioned with respect to each other to define a triple thickness representation of said indicium whereby a stylus of an engraving machine may trace the grooves on the pattern font of type to permit an engraving tool to selectively form, at a remote location, one of said single, double and triple thickness representation of said indicium.
- a method of engraving indicium including the steps of providing a pattern font, providing grooves defining a single thickness indicium on the pattern font, and a double thickness representation of the same indicium on the pattern font, providing the single and double thickness representation in a spaced relationship so that the grooves define a triple thickness representation of the same indicium, using a stylus of an engraving machine to selectively trace the grooves on the pattern font to selectively trace one of the single, double and triple thickness indicium.
- a method as set forth in claim 4 including the step of providing an engraver at a remote location to repeat the indicium traced by the stylus.
- a method as set forth in claim 4 including the steps of providing sufficient pattern fonts to permit selective engraving of one of a left, center and right position indicium in one of single, double and triple thickness.
- Apparatus including an engraving machine having a stylus and an engraving tool, a support surface on said engraving machine, a pattern font of type adapted to be supported by said support surface, said pattern font having a plurality of grooves therein, said grooves defining a single thickness representation of a letter and a separate and distinct double thickness representation of said letter, said single and double thickness letter grooves being positioned with respect to each other to define a triple thickness representation of said letter so that said stylus may trace the grooves on the pattern font of type to permit said engraving tool to selectively form, at a remote location, one of said single, double and triple thickness representation of said letter.
