SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,349 dated April 19, 1887. Application filed December 10. 1886. Serial No. 221,226. (No model.)

To all whom, it 12mg concern.-

Be it known that I, CONRAD DAUWALTER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Deep Water, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Stitching-Links and Implement for Applying the Same, ofwhich the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved seam and method of sewing leather; and it consists of the peculiar construction of parts, and the novel steps hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device for fastening the links to the leather. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the links. 7' Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the method of making a seam with my improved metallic links. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on line at at of Fig. 3.

A represents a stitch-link, which is preferably made of metallic wire of any desired material. One end of the said link is bent to form an eye, B, and the other end of the link is bent at right angles to form an arm, 0.

D represents a pair of pinchers having a pair ofjaws or arms, 1* and F, which are fulcrumed on abolt or pin,G. The outer end of onejaw is provided with a needle-point, H, and the opposite jaw has an opening, I, adapted to receive the said needle-point when the jaws are closed.

The operation of stitching two pieces of leather together is as follows: The meeting edges of the leather are overlapped and are inserted between the jaws of the pinchers, and

the said jaws are then clamped together, thereby causing the needle-point to make an opening through the meeting edges of the leather. The arm 0 of one of the links is then inserted in the said opening, the main portion of the link being extended on the leather in the direction of the proposed line of stitches or seams, and the leather is then again inserted between the clampingjaws, with the eye of the link directly over the opening I in the lower jaw of the pinchers. IVhen the jaws are clamped together, the needle-point passes through the eye of the link and the meeting edge of the leather, and at the same time clinches the outer end of the arm 0011 the under side of the leather. The second link then has its arm 0 passed through the eye of the first link and through the opening in the lever, and the operation before described is then repeated, thereby causing the links to be united firmlytogether and clinched on the leather. A suitable number of the said links are employed to extend the entire length of the proposed seam, and as the said links are connected together and are clinched under the leather, it will be readily understood that a seam of great strength and durability is thus made.

I do not wish to be limited to making the stitch-links of Wire, as I am aware that the same end may be attained by constructing the links of sheet metal by stamping therefrom.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 7 1. A seam having the edges of the material overlapping one another and a series of interlocking metallic links, A, passed through the lapped edges of the pieces and arranged lengthwise of the seam, thelinks being passed through eyes of adjacent links on one side of the material and clinched on the opposite side, as set forth.

2. The method of uniting two pieces of leather,consisting, first, in lapping the opposing edges of the leather one over the other; second, inserting a series of interlocking eyelinks in openings made through the lapped edges of the leather and arranging the said links in a single continuous-line along the line of the proposed seam and parallel with the lapped edges of theleather, and, third, clinching the ends of the links on the reverse side of the leather, substantially as described.

3. The method herein described of uniting leather, consisting in passing one end of a metallic eye-link through the leather and simultaneously forming an aperture through the leather for the succeeding link and clinching the end of the preceding link against the opposite side of the leather, as and for the purpose described.
